Lost London: Walking the River Peck Part 1: A Walk in the Park

The Peck is fed by springs that rise in the Honor Oak hills; the highest and most likely main source is thought to be somewhere around the top of One Tree Hill. Local legend states that it rises beneath the singular tree, the Oak of Honour, itself, though this is probably just another embellishment to the many stories surrounding the hill, which include a picnicking Queen Elizabeth I, Dick Turpin eyeing up people to rob, and the site of Boudica’s last battle.

What is true about One Tree Hill is its excellent views across south east London and all the way to the City – which must be left behind as the route sets off downhill through the woods. Present-day walkers have a series of “agitations” in 1896 to thank for the still being able to traverse the hill. One day in that year, the hill was enclosed without warning to be turned into a golf course – enraged locals tore down the fences and occupied the hill, leading to local councils purchasing the land and keeping it open as a park.

Exiting the woods at the bottom of the hill, the course of the river can only be loosely followed here, taking roads that skirt around the Honor Oak Reservoir. It is unlikely that the Peck feeds into this reservoir – most of the water comes from Hampton (17 miles away), with more from a well underneath.

After these necessary diversions, the walker arrives at Peckham Rye Park, where a stream emerges from a grille at the park’s eastern edge. This is the first glimpse of the Peck, the river that gave its name to Peckham, which simply means “the village by the River Peck”, with “Rye” meaning “watercourse”.

Peckham Rye Park is a pleasant green space, and here the river flows through many landscaped channels, feeding into The Lake (which is more of a large pond really), passing through a nature garden, and supplying the ornamental watercourses of a Japanese garden – and also providing a home for carp and terrapins!

Approaching the western side of the park, the various channels of the river return into one, ending in a small pond, which then drains away underground. This is the last that can be seen of the Peck’s waters, and the point at which the walk becomes less green and distinctly more suburban…
