Being away from home for so long meant that Max needed a resurgence in his funds. He hadn't profited at all by following Rii and staying for as long as he did. At least not financially. Travel expenses, food, transportation, hotel room. It all cost a decent amount and, so far, saving the world didn't pay. That meant Max was spending a lot more time working in his father's auto repair shop. The young man hated being low on money.
Having less than five hundred dollars in his account sent him into a tizzy, so he was laying under someone's car at that moment, getting his hands dirty. To be honest, he'd missed fixing cars. This felt normal. This was the life his mother had wanted for him. However, time could not move fast enough, because today, Max was counting down the seconds until he would see Rii. They were still working out their relationship, but so far, so good.
‘ i can’t remember why i left you. i was insane. ’
‘ it’s okay , rii . it doesn’t matter anymore . ’
❝ haven’t you people ever heard of closing the god damn door? ❞
‘have you considered not standing by other people’s bedroom doors?’
❛WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT FILL UP A “SUPER BIG GULP” CUP WITH 5 HOUR ENERGY AND CHUG THE WHOLE THING. MY HEART HAS EITHER STOPPED COMPLETELY OR IS BEATING SO FAST THAT I CAN’T FEEL MY OWN PULSE.❜
‘alright, uhm, this is weird. rii, you REALLY need to SIT here and CALM down. you’re like a freaking BALLjumping everywhere and i can’t stand you already.’

Max had been home for just over forty-eight hours. He’s been awake for two hours. He’d been quiet for the most part. His parents didn’t want to dig too quickly into the last few months he’d been gone. Lila and Cooper hadn’t arrived yet today. They’d been there the day before, but Max had still been unconscious. And Rii? Max didn’t even know if she knew where he was. His parents hadn’t taken him to a hospital. Max had been the subject of the Red Room. How would they explain it? Besides, it would mean keeping record of him in the hospital systems. Angel didn’t want that.
There was a small sketchbook on the bedside table. He occasionally opened it and flipped through the drawings and sketches. Most of them were of Rii… They’d taken her from him. Not physically. They’d never even touched her. But they’d taken her from his mind, repressed his memories so that he had no more vulnerability. No more fatal flaw. But he’d seen her once after that conditioning, saw her from afar and she still had had the same effect on him. But she hadn’t seen him and he only got the faint sense of knowing her before he left the hotel lobby they’d both been standing in.
He missed her.
