I finished this piece in Peru about 3-4 days ago. It is honoring a tribe we call the Mimbres -though archaeologists don't actually know what they called themselves. They were/are a people who inhabited the Mimbres valley and are known for their distinctive pottery style. These (mainly) bowls were painted in black and white with many different animals, plants and people. Some archeologists theorize that the bowls were used primarily in burial ceremonies where they were punctured with a "kill hole" and placed over the head of the corpse to release the spirit of both the bowl and the human it was buried with. I am fascinated and inspired by people who lived in close harmony with the land they inhabited and who had relationships with the plants and animals around them. If you have any information to add about the people of the Mimbres valley please do! #plantmedicine #newmexicobowl #mimbresvalley #ilaroseart #killhole #newmexico #walktheearthinharmony #onewithnature #honoringnatives
