i think i've found a way to settle the fenthur vs forthur discourse
forthur = in theory, not in practise
fenthur = in practise, not in theory
what it boils down to is that forthur, although not canon, is a great ship seeing as the characters are well matched and it's an easy explanation for everything being camp in the tv series and why ford chose to save arthur of everyone he could have chosen. however they fall out later in the books and ford can be a bit of a git so it doesn't really work out all that well. however it is good in fanfiction.
fenthur on the other hand has potential to be a good ship. the characters make sense together given that they both know theres something wrong with the Earth, and that they both feel out of place there. however, in my opinion, the ship doesn't work that well in canon. in So Long, every meeting we see them have, it's like a month of other meetings have come and gone offscreen. whether this is the case or not, i don't know, but if it isn't and those are supposed to be all their meetings ever... call me a slowburn reader but i don't think that makes for a great ship. but, like i said, it has potential and is good in fanfiction.
therefore both ships are equally good and bad in different ways, and can suck a bit in canon, so you can ship whoever in fanon
