it’s like the worst and this is almost entirely bc of how its fans treat it
like, “my crush turned out to be a sentient artificial intelligence that exists only in VR” is a cool premise worth exploring
and, admittedly, i haven’t been active in danganronpa fandom for quite some time now but like... when i was in it, at least, no one seemed interested in exploring the one thing about hinanami that sets it apart from any other “protag has a crush on some girl” relationship. you know, that she only exists inside VR. instead they treat it like any other fluffy het ship. it’s stupid, it’s pointless, it’s not interesting, and it’s often shipped by the same people who will argue till their throats are hoarse and the letters are worn off their keyboards about how bad komahina is.
like, here’s what canon hinanami is: hinata has a crush on his cute classmate. he doesn’t act on it, and there’s no strong evidence that she returns his feelings. still, he enjoys spending time with her, and the feeling seems to be mutual, and they’re on their way to at least being friends AND THEN SHE GETS EXECUTED AND IT’S THE FAULT OF THE CLASSMATE HE HAS REALLY CONFUSED FEELINGS TOWARDS AND THEN IT TURNS OUT THEY’VE BEEN IN VR THE WHOLE TIME AND SHE NEVER ACTUALLY EXISTED #SDR2 SPOILERS LOLOL but like. their canon relationship is interesting, but what makes it interesting is really not the “hinata thought nanami was cute” part, it’s the “nanami turned out to not be an actual human being who existed” part
like i NEVER say this but at least give me some damn angst!!!! please!!!! if i have to read another hinanami fic where nothing happens except they think about kissing each other or something i will kms. it’s 2017 and boys having crushes on girls is not inherently interesting and i wish we could all at least agree on that lol.
fuck and you want me to be honest? i don’t think nanami was ever romantically interested in hinata. i don’t remember any hint of her being anything other than friendly with hinata in canon. if you’re going to give me hinanami i want unrequited hinanami. “you ever like someone and have no idea if they even notice you as more than a friend?” hinata asks in frustration. “yes, hinata-kun,” komaeda says “by the way, i have to tell you something” hinata is already out the door
anyway everyone who’s ever produced content for this ship is really boring but it’s got some basic potential which is i guess why i’m even pissed about how boring y’all are. also komahinanami is an inherently better concept ok bye
