Even Though by Horizon Effect
Horizon Effect, formerly known as A Farewell to Kings, is an alternative rock band "straight from Atlanta to your soul". Since their last EP, the band has developed significantly in sound, image, and experience and changed their name to express that growth. It's obvious that they put their heart and soul into the lyrics and melodies of each track. According to vocalist and band manager Tanzim Milkey, "all of the rest of the stuff comes only after we have a song down that we ourselves would listen to."
Keep an eye out for Horizon Effect's upcoming album, due out in December, which will showcase the band's passionate new sound. (We'll be sure to let you know when it releases.)
You can also catch Horizon Effect at the Masquerade on Tuesday, August 14th at 7pm. They'll be playing for record executives, so this could be their big break! Show your love and support by attending. Tickets are only $10.
Free Bit: We're offering an exclusive sneak peak demo of "Manifesto" from the bands upcoming album. You can download it for free here.
"Look at how far you've come, not how much you have left to do."
I feel like I'm not improving as quickly as I'd like, but I've been at it for only about a month. So here's a look back at the first run I recorded on dailymile.com:
July 30, 2011: 1.33 miles in 22 minutes, 16:32 per mile pace. Walked 1 minute, ran 1 minute three times; then walked rest of distance. When coming home, ran ~2 minutes more, in small stretches. Went pretty slow on the run, focused on form. Knee felt okay.
August 22,2011: 3.25 miles in 42 minutes, 12:52 per mile pace. Ran 3:00, walked 1:00. Felt great -- knee's much better than it was last week. Reached midway point of last week's tempo run at ~15:09 -- just as fast, but today was an easy day! Started pushing it towards turn-around so that I could have an "even" time, and my knee wasn't too happy. I slowed down for the next two runs, and it was okay after that. My split was ~20:15, so it didn't slow me down much at all. Good to know that even if I push it too hard mid-run, I can recover and still finish the run.
I went 2.5 times as far, and I took 3:40 per mile off my pace -- that's 22% faster! That's awesome! And the run yesterday was an easy recovery run, not even trying for pace. Just a week before that, I ran a 5K at a sub-11-minute mile (i.e., 5.5 minutes per mile faster for more than twice the distance -- or 33% faster).
I've been feeling discouraged lately, feeling like I'm not improving fast enough. I know that the rest of my body can handle going a lot farther and a lot faster. That was true in the beginning, and it's still true now -- but it's less true. Even if my lungs and muscles aren't improving as fast as they could were it not for my knee, they're still improving. If I saw the above stats from someone else -- someone without a knee problem -- I'd tell them they were doing a phenomenal job, improving at a great rate, and to keep up their training. So listen up, self: good job, and keep it up!
