Naru thinks back on his time in the orphanage with Gene
This headcanon belongs to horribleoclock. I just wrote it up all nice and pretty.
The other children in the orphanage had never liked Noll. He suspected---no, knew--- that it was because he and Gene were very close, because they were brothers, and most of all, because he and Gene spoke Japanese with each other. The children thought the twins were talking about them, and did not like it. Of course, Noll and Gene were talking about them---that is, whenever Gene could get a conversation out of his younger brother. Noll preferred his books and solitude, while Gene liked talking and playing. So it was only natural that most of the children preferred Eugene to Oliver.
Noll and Gene couldn't exactly argue with them. It had been Noll's abilities that had gotten them taken away from their mother. He'd shown up at daycare, and then preschool, covered in bruises. He couldn't control it; didn't even know what had caused them, but the adults had blamed his mother and reported her to Child Protective Services. The bruises kept appearing, and they were put into the care of their grandparents. That was when Noll caused his first poltergeist.
The twins loved their mother very much. She would comfort them when they had nightmares, and gently tend to Noll's unexplained bruises when they appeared after particularly bad ones. They were quite naturally upset about being forcibly removed from her. Noll, being the quiet one, expressed it in fewer words than Gene. He ended up using flying objects instead.
Shortly after that incident they were given to the state, because their grandparents couldn't handle the twins' abilities. A month after that, they were informed of their mother's death. What the state didn't tell them was that grief-stricken over the loss of her sons, she'd committed suicide. Noll caused another poltergeist that day.
Eight months after they were taken to the orphanage, Noll had his first psychometric vision. Danny, one of the boys who shared a room with the twins, had dropped one of his shoes. Noll bent to retrieve it, and was greeted with a vision of being violently shaken, then thrown across the room. There was intense pain as he felt bones crack and break. He cried out, only to be hit across the face, not once or twice but many times. He slumped against a wall, broken and bloody, as the man who had beaten him threw a beer bottle at his head. He fell to the floor, narrowly avoiding the bottle, but not avoiding the rain of shattered glass. Everything went black.
When he came to, he was lying on the floor of his room in the orphanage, Danny's shoe in his hand, and several boys, including Danny and Gene, hovering over him. Danny snatched the shoe away from him. "I told you not to touch my stuff, freak! Serves you right."
Noll stood on shaky legs, aided by Gene, and looked solemnly at the bigger boy. "Your dad drank a lot, didn't he?"
"How the hell did you know that?" Danny demanded.
The younger twin looked at the shoe in Danny's hand. "I saw it when I touched your shoe. He was beating you up. It hurt a lot."
The next sensation he felt was the boy's fist connecting with his face. He reeled backward, but Gene caught him and pushed him back towards Danny. The twins practiced fighting often, especially when the other children decided to bully them. They also read martial arts books, which made the other children laugh more, because they were being "typical Asians," as Kevin once put it. This gave them a bit of an advantage sometimes, and it's what led Noll to duck Danny's next punch and land a solid kick to the boy's knee. Danny fell to the floor, and Noll jumped on top of him and began punching his face until Gene mentally kicked him. Enough. Any more and you'll be in serious trouble.
Noll stood up, brushed himself off, wiped the blood from his mouth, and stomped from the room. He'd holed himself up in the orphanage's small library until one of the matrons came to punish him for what he'd done. The other boys had all backed Danny's side of the story, that Noll had hit him first, and since it was only his and Gene's word against theirs, the matrons were believing Danny. Noll was restricted from play for a week as punishment. Gene was punished too, for not stopping his brother. "I did stop you though," Gene muttered to Noll as they swept the floor of the dining room. "Stopped you from hurting him even more." Noll hadn't said much since the incident, except to describe what had happened to Gene late that night, in Japanese, so that the other children didn't overhear and think he was even more of a freak, though he already knew that he was. Or so he thought, until Martin and Luella came along and told them differently.
"NARU!" He jumped slightly, then turned to look a Mai, who held a bloody flannel in her hand. "Geez, you idiot," she said, setting the flannel down and dabbing at his cheek with cotton wool soaked in antiseptic. He hissed softly at the sting. "Hold still!"
That's right. He'd had to protect Mai from the possessed client, who'd managed to land a hit before he'd knocked him out. The ring the client was wearing had torn his cheek open, and Mai had started cleaning it when she'd asked about where he'd learned to incapacitate an opponent so quickly (though not in those exact words). He shook his head slightly to rid himself of the memories, making Mai scowl and grab his chin in her hand.
"Hold. Still." Her face was just a bit flushed, probably because she was touching him so intimately. "What were you thinking about?" she asked as she applied the plaster to his face.
"Nothing," he replied stoically. That's what the past was, anyway. Nothing, compared to the present.
Mai let out a huff and gently slapped the plaster into place. "I know you were thinking about something. It was all over your face." Her voice softened. "Was it... about Gene?"
"Are you done?" Without waiting for a reply, he stood and moved across the room to where Lin sat observing the monitors. "Mai," he said after a moment, "tea."
Several minutes later, when a steaming cup of tea was in front of him, he turned to Mai. "For the record, I was thinking about how annoying you can be." He then had to bite back a smirk as she visibly debated whether to dump the tea over his head or not.
Still working on this GH headcanon because it's storming so I can't shower. I managed to write a couple paragraphs, so hopefully I can finish it tonight for Lily!
Avoiding Calculus homework and watching Supernatural while working on some Ghost hunt headcanon for horribleoclock. It's slow going when it's not your own headcanon?
So expect something about Gene and Noll's time in the orphanage at some point, I guess.
