Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham (2023)
🦇 “A cursed prophecy, a bat-shaped god, and a film that should’ve been far more terrifying.” — 3/5 Stars
Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham had everything it needed to be a Lovecraftian masterpiece: 1920s Gotham, occult bloodlines, cosmic horror, and a Bruce Wayne haunted by forces beyond human comprehension.
And yet… it never commits to the dread.
It’s better than most straight-to-video animated fare—but it doesn’t hold a candle to DC’s true animated greats like The Killing Joke or Under the Red Hood. Worse, you never truly care about its characters… and honestly, you’re never even sure if you’re meant to care about Batman himself.
The horror feels ornamental, not existential. The voice acting (especially Bruce) is flat. Ra’s al Ghul’s design looks like a rejected Mortal Kombat skin. And tonally? It wobbles between gothic tragedy and Scooby-Doo mystery.
Still—animated films are films. And this one deserves credit for trying something weird in a franchise that often plays it safe.
Just don’t expect it to haunt you. Full spoiler-free review , and trailer in source.
