Bend Or, winner of the Epsom Derby and St. James's Palace S, of 1880 and the Epsom Gold Cup and Champions S. of 1881 (among others). He went on to be an influential sire, and through Phalaris is the direct sire-line ancestor of most Thoroughbreds today.

He also had white and dark spots on his coat, which are today known as "Bend Or Spots"

Horse Tutorial: Eye Basics

Some 2 minute gesture drawings of horses today, followed by some tied down drawings of a few of the poses. This was a useful exercise for me as I could firstly focus only on energy and force, and then I could have fun analysing the anatomy afterwards.

I sketched this when I was trying to make sense of traditional Japanese saddles for a comic project set in feudal Japan. My main reference was the Wikipedia article for Kura (saddle). Here are the romaji translations, since I was being a big nerd and practicing my hiragana:

stirrups: abumi

saddle seat: kura tsubo

saddle seat: kurabane

leather pads: shita-kura

saddle flaps: aori

Kind of obscure subject matter, but I hope this finds whoever needs it. :)
