Let’s not lie, horses are expensive, and that’s the price we are willing to pay for the animals that we love. However, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t shop smartly and save a buck or two where possible.
Here are a few money saving tips for the not-so-fabulously-wealthy horse owner.
1. Shop around.
Okay, so you’ve bought your riding gear and tack from Charlie & Sons for as long as you can remember, and there is nothing wrong with loyalty, but try having a look around as well. Prices vary from shop to shop and while equestrian clothing may be cheaper at one place, horse saddles may be cheaper at a new store. If shopping online remember to add shipping costs.
Also, remember that “local is lekker”. Locally made products are often less expensive, also supporting local means job creation within your country.
2. Don’t be a brand snob.
The best tack brand may not always be in your budget, and that is okay. There are plenty of other reputable saddleries and equestrian stores available with quality products. Products from lesser known brands are often of the same quality as, if not better than, expensive brand-name products.
3. Buy in bulk
Hay, feed, dewormer, horse shampoo, etc. can be bought in bulk and split between friends to save money. Most items are cheaper the larger the quantity – for example, Trident Saddlery’s high shine horse shampoo costs R59.00 per litre bottle, however if you buy a 5litre bottle you will pay R195.46. This means you only pay R39.10 per litre when you buy in bulk.
4. Shop sales.
A lot of tack shops have regular sales at the end of the season, or for whatever other reason. Follow your favourite tack shop’s Facebook page for news about upcoming sales and events. You may find that a certain item is on sale, or that everything in the store is 50% off for a certain time. You don’t want to miss out on these great opportunities.
