Book Of The Day: Complete Works Of Rimbaud

This book could very well be your Bible. That is, if you only own one book for the remainder of your life, this should be it. Trust me.

Rimbaud teaches us to question every authority, and see our way through the barriers into a new plane of reality. He is responsible for advancing and practically inventing the prose poem. He introduced a new level of sensual explicitness to literature. He ridiculed the church, the dominant cultural institution of his time. He ridiculed his fellow artists for their comparatively conservative approach. He was openly gay in a time when there wasn’t even a proper word in the English language for homosexuality. And he did this all before the age of nineteen. This was a unique individual, in his time, or any.

And at least partially due to his maverick tendencies, certain factions of the world have moved towards an embrace of the ideals he espoused. Especially in the cultures of beat poetry and rock’n’roll and all that was derived from the two, he is a profoundly influential figure. We need to get back to Rimbaud now. We always need to get back to Rimbaud.
