Just another recreation of a random pic I found on Pinterest.
I’m actually reading new info on how to perfect my art and have been trying new methods. Tell me if you would like to see more of these or process videos!
Soaking our cares away in the thermal river baths of Thermopile.
We spent three weeks here with these swirling thermal waters on our doorstep, rising early each morning and slowly awakening our bodies with a hot bath just as the Romans and the Turks would’ve done in ancient times.
Three weeks is a long time to be stationary for us, but we needed time to stop, a space in which to create, and by the end of our time there we knew every rock and nook of that river.
We bathed early in the morning before the sunlight burst through the mountaintops, we bathed in the evenings when the dusk would tint the rising steam purple, and we’d bathe late at night under the light of the stars, sipping limoncello and warming our bones against the freezing night air.
Our only company was the herd of goats which passed through daily, accompanied by their shepherd who would knock on our van demanding we give him either euros or potatoes. On the first day we gave him some potatoes, but after that we just hid in our van until he stopped shouting “𝘌𝘶𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘩! 𝘗𝘢𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘢𝘴!” and went away.
On our last day in Greece we discovered another hot spring tucked further into the mountains, and it would’ve been a romantic end to our time here had my purse not been stolen from the van in broad daylight.
We left the country with mixed emotions, weaving our way back North around the snow-dusted base of Mount Olympus. Greece had been a much-needed rest for us but it was missing that distinct essence of Balkanness here, and there was a place that was tugging at our heart strings and calling us with a force that was hard to resist.
In the midst of winter, we were heading back to North Macedonia.
We felt truly privileged to be here, soaking in our second hot spring in just as many days. There were very few in North Macedonia, but we’d managed to sniff them out, and it wasn’t hard when they smelled as pungent as this one.
Along with the sulphurous fumes a noxious gas was spurting from the pipeline that fed the pool; enough to make you light-headed. The water erupted with a deep gurgling sound as the earth spewed hot water at just the perfect temperature for bathing.
We’d camped on the river nearby, watching boys herd their cows across the water and a local man who came to dig up soil and load it into his vintage tractor as the sun went down. We were somewhere in the rural lands of North Macedonia, a landscape interspersed with hills and agricultural land untouched by the mountains that imposed over the rest of the country. We’d taken a series of confusing dirt tracks and arrived at this hidden spot just before sunset, and as the dawn broke through the clouds we were ready and eager for an early morning soak.
Our relaxation was short-lived however; as we left the warmth of the hot springs, not an hour down the road our van came to a sudden stop in a cloud of smoke.
It took us three days, five mechanics and many headaches to figure out what was wrong. It wasn’t a question of our van’s reliability, despite being 18 years old and having done over 150,000 miles; no, what it came down to was 10 litres of dodgy fuel, laced with water from a dodgy garage.
Thankfully we had the help of some extremely kind Macedonian men, who felt so bad that this had happened in their country they didn’t even want paying for the work, not even after one of them siphoned the contaminated fuel out of our tank with his mouth.
Unlike our previous breakdowns, of which there are many, this time we felt in control. This time it wasn’t a case of leaving in the hands of a garage; we understood the problem and we knew what we had to do. But sometimes when you’re stuck out on the road, in a country where you don’t speak the language and every problem can feel overwhelming, all you need is a helping hand and a push to get you going in the right direction again.
Clouds of steam rushed out of the small cave entrance and into our faces as we peered inside one at a time, squinting into the mysterious depths within.
The hike to the cave hadn’t been a particularly challenging one, a fairly straightforward path covered in gravel and pieces of ceramic crushed into a fine white sand eventually turning into vertical mud steps as the trees thinned out and the surrounding valley views were revealed.
We found ourselves in the mountainous heart of North Macedonia, in pursuit of a thermal spring we knew very little about. All we were going off was a poor quality satellite image and a blurry photo of a man sitting inside the entrance to a cave. There was little to no information in English or otherwise on this place, yet curiosity compelled us and we felt inexorably drawn to the rewards of adventure.
We climbed up to a ledge overlooking the valley where sat a small, silty pool of perfectly steaming water, fed by a tiny trickling stream. Beneath the weathered limestone, dug into the face of the wall, was a small squareish hole with a glimmer of blue water at its foot.
Steam billowed out as thick and dense as the low clouds which clung to the surrounding mountains, clearing for a moment to allow us to see the back of the cave disappearing into blackness.
We quickly stripped off and sunk into the hot water and the inky depths, trusting our bodies to the unknown within, but once our eyes had adjusted to the darkness the full beauty of the cave was revealed.
It was big enough to hold ten, maybe twelve people, with a jagged rocky ceiling and smooth, textured walls.
We lit a couple of candles, melted the wax slightly and stuck them to the walls, then lay back to admire the natural wonder we were in with the relaxing sounds of water dripping from the stalactites above and the distant echoes of the Call to Prayer.
This was the fiery, steaming heart of the earth where we sat enclosed by cliffs while the magma-heated waters from below the ground bubbled up. The pool was 40°C, the perfect temperature to sustain an hours-long bathing session, while we chatted to elderly locals in half-English and soaked the day away.
P. S. Taking photos inside a steamy cave is super HARD, so it’s not the best unfortunately.
