Hot Pod is a trade newsletter about the emerging podcast and on-demand audio industry, by me, Nick Quah. It’s also syndicated on Nieman Lab, and the work here has also been cited by the New York Times, Bloomberg, Wired, the Columbia Journalism Review, the Wall Street Journal, and the Financial Times. Mmm podfasters???? I have never listened to a podcast with a 2x speed... But now I am curious...
[social sandbox] Reaching new audiences through #PubRadioVoice
Oh, hey, how are you today? We’re doing well on the Social Media Desk and hope the same is true for you.
1. Reaching new audiences through #PubRadioVoice. I think everyone, at some point last week, was talking about Chenjerai Kumanyika’s commentary on the sound of public radio and what that sound says about us. Code Switch organized a Twitter chat around Kumanyika's questions and Gene Demby says the resulting conversations “underscore how different NPR’s audiences are in different spaces.” In the same Social Media Desk post, Tasneem Raja noted that the #PubRadioVoice discussion “lives on without us,” drawing in “a whole new audience.” That sounds like success to me. Also, don’t miss Kenya Downs' roundup of the Twitter chat.
2. Chasing sharks and stories on Reunion Island. Emma Jacobs, NPR’s “Above the Fray” fellow, has brought our On The Road Tumblr back to life with dispatches from her current trip to this remote French island in the Indian Ocean. Read her introduction and then follow along as she nails down her stories for air.
3. A plug for Nick Quah’s Hot Pod newsletter. It’s all about podcasts. It’s for people who care about podcasting and the community around it. That’s you! Subscribe to it now.
4. A plug for Mel Kramer’s email newsletter. Surprisingly, it’s called “Mel’s Sandbox” and you should subscribe to it for items such as this one:
The domestic violence PSA that just aired during the Super Bowl was a verbatim transcript of this Reddit thread from eight months ago.
