I was thinking about hot pot today, and for some reason my brain kicked itself back to something I heard on the radio once. A very long time ago, two radio hosts were talking about the uptick in cook it yourself restaurants, citing a pancake place. Though considering the radio covered the area I lived in, the uptick in cook it yourself restaurants was probably more likely Chinese hot pot or Korean BBQ places.

And they joked, they weren’t being mean about it, but they were like… why would you go out to a restaurant and pay money to cook your own food when you could cook it at home? Which told me… they hadn’t even been to one of those places. But it was fascinating to listen to at the time because it was very easy for me to forget there are people who had never experienced hot pots or Korean style BBQs

So a few months back I remember we were going to the hot pots for youth group activity and the leader I was riding with had this rule that everyone got to pick one song at a time and we just passed around the aux cord. I didn’t have my phone with me so he let me use his and I was scrolling through wanting to find a good song and I come across Bohemian Rhapsody so naturally when it’s my turn I play it. I think the leader was a little surprised I knew what Queen was since everyone else had no idea and were all playing country songs. Naturally I sing along and when the song ends the leader says something along the lines of, “Wow, you knew every word to that.” and, in the moment I just sort of laughed and agreed, but in my head all I could think was why in the hell would I play a song that I didn’t know all of the words to. I’m embarrassed when I’m driving alone and I can’t sing all of the words in a song. What kind of nutter would play a song in that situation that they didn’t know by heart? Anyone?
