religion
I've wrestled with my own spirituality for decades. I'm currently thinking that most religions have roots in peace, love, and brotherhood, and it's a shame that more faiths don't embrace what's common among them instead of becoming angry over the differences. The outlier in all this for me has been atheism. My current perspective is that science gives us greater understanding of our universe, but we're a long way from being able to explain it all. So, we have to take some things on faith. And in that commonality, I find peace despite the differences. --- "So, some living thing or spirit or energy force, some being, with infinite powers, was bored of nothingness, right?" she said. "Then, starting with nothing, this being created the universe in a few days, and set time in motion, and now here we are, right?" she said. "Yep." he quipped. "And there's no proof, except folk tales which have been re-told, written and translated countless times like a game of 'telephone', right?" she said. "It's called faith, honey." he said. "More like mass dementia, if you ask me. Science has shown the Earth is billions of years old. What about the dinosaurs?" she said. "Let me see if I have my science correct." he started. "By carbon dating and complex geological studies, and by applying advanced math to astronomical observations, we are sure that billions of years ago the universe must have started from one spot, and with a big bang, right? And we evolved from worms or apes or something?" he said. "More or less." she said. "What was before this *Big Bang*? Where did all that matter and energy come from?" he asked. "Well, there's this gravitational singularity and string theory stuff ... it gets really complicated ..." she answered. "That sounds like something which, at some point sooner or later, you just have to have faith that it's true and the math is correct." he said. "No! It's proven! It's scientific!" she cried. "It's faith. Faith in logic models and intellect. [Not that there's anything wrong with that.](http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Seinfeld#The_Outing_.5B4.17.5D)" he explained. "Very cute. Jerk." she exclaimed. "Look, we're both referring to timelines based on stories and extrapolations. We're both referring to a universe suddenly starting from nothing ... you're atheistic science is a religion, not that much different from mine. Think about it." he said. "What the ...?" she said, pondering this strange view of science. After a few uncomfortably silent moments, he finally said, "What's for dinner?"
The "Us" Problem
So, some of my female friends and I were talking about this issue that black athletes have been having on our campus (U of A). Lately we've been in the headlines.... but not for good things. There have been reports of women getting beat by some of our players and not just one. So, in our discussion, myself and another state that this is problematic for US. Quickly another states, "naw it's not our problem it's theirs". Not to get in an argument with her, I stated, It's not just theirs, it's OURS, and if we keep thinking that way we will never get anywhere. In response she stated that our men don't care about us so why should we bother with them.....
There was more to this short but intense conversation but it had me thinking.... In some ways she was right, living in Arizona I rarely see any love from the brothas. There is always this on-going debate about the brotha who doesn't like dating a sista but on the other I felt she was wrong, we cannot compare one being of a man to all and we, as African American females, should be subjugated to the same. I mean, I see the positive love from some, so I can't be mad but then I also see the negative and the excuse of a women who has too much attitude. I mean what's the deal! It's bad enough that we constantly get images of what we should LOOK and ACT like by people who don't even LOOK or SOUND like us! Then be turned away by the same man who we would think would be in our corner. It baffles me... sometimes I see it as a complex, a rejection of ones self, but who knows. On a better note, I would like to give a shout to all the men who do see us as strong, beautiful, and bold queens in the mist of societal views. I LOVE MY STRONG BLACK MEN!
