Menu Monday: Around 1882, a Princeton student (David Hunter McAlpin, Jr.) in the Class of 1885 had supper at the Hotel Lafayette in Philadelphia. At that time, one might be served things at an evening supper we might today associate with breakfast or brunch, like griddle cakes and hot cereal (i.e., corn mush with milk).

Menu Monday: Henry Cook Thompson, Princeton Class of 1871, pasted this 1869 menu from the Merchants’ Hotel in New York in his scrapbook. We think it was for May 15, but it’s unclear. We are able to make out the other annotations on the menu, however. The fish of the day was halibut, the lamb was served with mint sauce, the game on hand was cold pigeons, there were rhubarb and strawberry pies in addition to apple, and oranges were available for dessert. The rhubarb and strawberries are a stronger suggestion that the month written above is May.
According to the New York Times (April 14, 1878), the Merchants’ Hotel closed permanently in 1878.

Menu Monday: This breakfast menu for the Princeton Inn appeared in the January 6, 1954 issue of the Princeton Herald. Though most area hotels probably wouldn’t serve chicken livers or fish for breakfast now, most of the rest of this menu is probably easily recognizable to the modern palate, with some slight modifications.

Menu Monday: We found this menu from “The Antlers” in Colorado Springs, Colorado, for December 23, 1894 in the scrapbook of a member of the Princeton Class of 1894, Louis Irving Reichner. The original Antlers hotel burned down in 1898, and it has occupied a few different buildings in Colorado Springs, but it’s still there.
