What is the sense of smell?
The sense of smell is unique because the sense organs that measure odors are directly connected to the brain, so the human body's sense of smell is superb.
Odors enter your body through your nose, and they come from particles in the air that you trap when you breathe. The sense of smell is enhanced by inhaling deeply through the nose and by moving closer to the source of the odor.
Inside the nose is a large nerve called the "olfactory bulb," which extends from the top of the nose and connects directly to the brain. Air molecules inhaled through the nose trigger a nerve response in the bulb, which immediately notifies the brain when it detects an odor.
Higher concentrations of odor molecules produce deeper brain stimulation through the olfactory bulb. This makes strong odors offensive and nauseating. Lighter scents bring milder signals to the brain.
You need the sense of smell for a variety of reasons. Strong, unpleasant odors clearly warn the brain that the food you are about to eat is bad. Sweet and pleasant odors make you feel relaxed. Body odors (pheromones) can even help you stay in touch with loved ones. Regardless of the odor, your brain and nose work together so you can enjoy the smell.
