On the Road - Houndmouth

Houndmouth fits right into the niche between the washboard folk revival pluckiness of Of Monsters and Men and the "everyone loves everybody" San Francisco rawness of Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeroes. Usually I wouldn't consider this a good thing, and honestly, judging by most of their output it isn't. This is a group jumping on a bandwagon, with singers that can only sound good in a studio.

However, I live by a creed, and that creed is that even the most terrible musical acts can stumble upon a good song (not that Houndmouth are terrible, just remarkably mediocre). "On the Road" is that inspired melody, where all the things one usually hates about this kind of music coalesces into something addictive and, well, pretty damn good.

The piano plunks are a surprisingly not grating counterpoint to the guitar hook. The singing and harmonies are appropriately coarse and evoke a sort of weathered beauty. And, as this blogs contributor Ben Foerg has regularly noted with disdain, I'm a sucker for a catchy chorus. And this is a damn catchy chorus.
