The day has finally come, the release of Coin’s sophomore album How would you know if you never try. Of course, the release of their new album happens to fall on next tour stop aka Michigan. 

 I regret not bringing in a cake (next time, I’ll be sure to bring one next time.).

Secret M83 photos

Sometimes you take a bunch photos and you think to yourself. “I have to quickly put this up.” So you are scanning through them only finding things that peak your interest, Couple months later you go through that folder and realize “Shit, there are some really good stuff in here that I didn’t see before.”

This was the case for the G Eazy photos (Link Here) and the same case for M83. Here are a few of the M83 photos I found.

You can find out all the information of your latest band and artist on tours dates, magazines they just interview for, and updates day life which is practically studying culture right there.

Finding hidden bands dates on venue’s websites

You would be surprised to find out that one bad you just found out about has a tour date near you. I just messing around on one of the venue sites and found out Little Dragons was going to be in my area (Little Dragons normally never stops in Michigan).

Menus of the phone

You are in line for how long? The chances of coming across free pizza slices are slim as the crust they chose. Why not watch the entertainment of the pizza guy trying to find you in the line. Just make sure you give him a tip.

Learn a new hobby

Learn to play an instrument

The chances of going on stage and performing with the artist might be slim (however not impossible, I know one girl who got to). However, those meet and greets get a little more interesting when you mention that you have been working one of their(insert artist song).  

Learn to paint/draw/etc

Saint Motel, Grimes, TOP,  and many more feature fanart on their social media pages. Why not?

Learn to make t-shirts /graphics designs

I met someone who had followed a band for quite some time back before they became big. She uses to make t-shirts for their merch. Now I’m not saying make these t-shirts to sell. That a red flag there. What I mentioning might be playing back to the last post. Create an option that artist never thought of. Who knows, your design might be on that rack.

Be more healthy

Order light

Skip on the energy drinks/ drink more water

Save Money

StoryTime: Aesthetic Magazine

So I’m going to tell you the story of how I started working with an online magazine.  It was the beginning of the new year and I had Drones tour (photos here). This was right at the time many of the venues I love so much change their policy on cameras (some would even put them as dangerous as a pair of brace knuckles.). So the future of what I was going to do next was very gloom. I had just contacted my first manager on getting a photo pass but I don’t know how I was going to progress from that. 

That was until I received a like on my Tumblr page from one of my Muse’s photos. A magazine company called @aesthetic-magazine . Granted I can’t seem to find the post to give proof, trust me it was there. After wandering around the pages of their website, I submitted an application. Okay, I make it look like that was super easy. Honestly, I spent hours staring at my work making sure it look decent enough for someone to look at them. Anxiety was turning into a man with a magnifying glass pointing out errors.  The wait was going to be weeks end up being an hour or so. (Which is still true to this day for me.)

I was asked to do basically a test run to see how I do under pressure (or something along those lines. I don’t recall). Submitted a few ideas and Carly Rae Jepsen peak his interest. Once it was said and done and I got my pass and I didn’t have to worry about sneaking my camera into the show. 

Of course, I was in a whole new ball game. I actually had a deadline, not even the personal deadline I give to myself. To quickly edit the photos and submit them in. The show and that night was probably the most intense and exciting thing I went through. It was the first time I actually got to enjoy the show from the back of the venue. Carly Rae Fans are my favorite fans to ever come across.

From then, I was photographing groups like Sam Beam & Jesca Hoop to Porter Robinson & Madeon. I’m currently on my way to Chicago to photograph Reaction NYE for them.

3 tips for concert photographers

Be Tall - Now that sounds incredibly silly but let me explain. Sometimes when you are in the pit, you look around and feel incredibly small next to the stage and other photographers. Now you could go the route for high heels (prefer choice weapon, a boot heel with a strong heel and traction.) or you can act tall.   With your camera in your hand extend it as high as you can above your head using the camera strap as a secure monopod. It allows you to be a foot or two taller without being that guy who brings in a step stool. The only downside is that you will be going at this blindly since you cannot visually see the subject you are trying to photograph. So have a game plan when you are doing that. 

Be Strong - Both physically and mentally. I’m not saying lift weights but be prepare to carry equipment with you. DSLR are heavy and if you cannot afford/ don’t want to work with a compact DSLR be prepare to carry heavy lens. This industry doesn’t care if you want to pursue this a career so expect that backlash. Don’t back down. Don’t let them destroy your ideas.  Stand your ground and act like you are meant to be there, photographing that same group as the rest of the photographers.

Be Polite- That’s a given. If you got your photo pass from a band or a magazine. Thank them especially after the shows, they put in the effort to get those contacts and make it work so you can photograph the show. Be courteous to those who are trying to get around you in the photo pit. It goes back to the second tip. Rather leave an impression than act upon oppression.

I photographed so many artists that I haven’t really taken the time to look back at them.  This small series will be filled with small moments that I could not believe I caught on my camera. From within the crowd to an all-access badge, the journey is not over but this year’s lookbook is. Cannot wait to see what is in store for Lookbook 2017.

Headliners: Porter Robinson & Madeon 

On their “Shelter” Tour.

I had the chance to photograph Porter Robinson and Madeon for their Shelter tour in Royal Oak theater for Aesthetic Magazine.  This was the first time for me photographing an EDM show.  Everytime I saw an edm show pic, they were shot from either behind or in front of them using a fisheye lens. It was hard to digest the idea of using my fisheye lens for something already predictable. So I photograph as if it was a normal rock band.
