the fact that the queerrats were the regular humans all along hit me like a punch to the gut. it’s one of the best stories i’ve ever come across. and the fact that we were from the pov of the oppressors all along was both genius and horrifying…

YES! that’s what GOT me real good. because even as saki was finding out the truth i STILL couldn’t believe it! i was like ALL THIS TIME?! WHY DID IT TAKE ME SO LONG TO REALIZE?!

probably because it took saki just as long. and she had all the proof sitting right in front of her, just like we as viewers did.

also a good chunk of the story was spent investigating HOW saki’s world came to be. so i thought it was the core problem, just like saki did. but really all that explaining was to underscore EXACTLY what was more important to the “gods” and the price they were willing to pay to maintain it.

i think the most important thing is that when saki found out she didn’t just sweep that shit under the rug or hide it all to keep others from knowing. she wrote it all down for others to learn from it. she kept investigating even when ppl told her to turn back. 

but what’s scary to me is that even with ALL OF THAT, her privilege remains firmly intact. even after saving the hornet’s queen. how much yet, how little has changed. and who’s to say that saki’s child would be the beginning of something different? her parents kno better, but what about her environment? i mean---look at that museum. look at squera on display. 

they thought they got RID of human cruelty. look at it LITERALLY ON DISPLAY.

SSY is just---WOW. SO GOOD.

i’m glad you’re liking it (i told you so!) and SSY is definitely a series where you’re supposed to question everything like that. i can’t wait for your reaction to the ending. it’s so gut wrenching, shameful and emotionally draining (in a good way!)

enjoy! ep4 is the first time i was like WOW. it’s a rare instance where an anime is adapted from a (long ass) novel, and you can feel that in the pacing/exposition. i hope you enjoy it!!

tbh i wasnt sure if i liked it at first!

i felt like the story was going one direction and then suddenly veered off to the left and off a cliff, lol. i LOVED the camping trip and the meeting with that demon thingy but they lost me at the rat battle. everything just got hella weird, and i didnt care about anything that was going on.

but the story post the 2 yr time jump is AWESOME. i am MADLY IN LOVE with the costume design for the characters and i am really enjoying the story as it unfolds. i also like the slightly creepy undertones. sometimes it feels horror-movie-ish but in a good way.

ALSO! FUCK YEAH SEXUAL FLUIDITY! i cant remember the last time i saw ANYTHING with queer couples existing without comment. and double fuck yeah to the female leadership. i really like saki so i’m happy she’s at the center of the most important plot points. 

also the animation is so pretty! i didn’t like it at first, tbh. there is this one episode in the beginning where the animation is inexplicably bad and really different from the episode previous so i got so confused because i thought i accidentally started watching something else, lol. but it got better so it really grew on me. ESPECIALLY the sequence where saki goes to visit shun past the spiritual barriers. something about the coloring and character designs makes me think of old-school anime even tho it’s not drawn in that particular style....

anyway, i just finished episode 13? i’m done my marathon for today but so far i’m REALLY impressed.

awesome! i loved s1, though s2 is more refined and has the perfect ending. i am looking forward to your thoughts on SSY. i expect you’ll wanna make several posts/liveblog it because it’s THAT GOOD.

s1 is my favorite between the two but ITA that s2 was more refined. it felt more serious too, and i love how the conflict between the boys and their futures moved the plot along. all of them got such great character development!

Nevermind KLK, if you want an amazing anime then you should watch Shin Sekai Yori, the best dystopia ever. the best fictional story i’ve ever come across, period. the MAL synopsis should sell you: myanimelist.net/anime/1…

so i went to find this post so i can start this anime and then i just realized that i never replied back to u! noooooooooo!

anywho, i did end up finishing KLK. and u kno if they would just drop the fanservice i am so down with a good amount of what i saw. i hope some other animation house takes a stab at shoujo with shonen fight scenes because that was basically the best of both worlds in KLK. the fanservice and sexual harassment tho---like...i could do without ALL of that. it was especially extra because even with the nudist beach, the men were never sexualized in that same way. 

anywho...

i’m gonna do some research and see where i stream shin sekai yori. the description sounds great! i’m also starting free!

in my view there’s nothing remotely empowering or deep about kill la kill, at least from the creator’s pov - it’s clear they’re not seeking to make anything of that sort. it’s just fanservice, with a OTT plot. i liked it enough to finish it, at least

well i do feel like the school hierarchy is like an extreme version of japanese schools a la battle royal. and i do see some peeps about school as a means to oppress rather than educate. there is also some extreme class warfare going on. so i feel like it has some DEPTH, regardless of what the creator’s say. u kno, death of the author and all that.

but i do agree that the excessive fanservice detracts from all of that. it’s also weirdly misogynisitc. and for a show whose driving force is entirely female, that’s just kinda sad. i mean, i just finished episode 4 but i REALLY feel like kill la kill coulda been another postmodern magical girl story a la madoka and revolutionary girl utena had they actually WENT there instead of making nods. but just like u i like it enough to keep going.

this just reminds me, i need to sit my ass down and watch free. i wish it was up on netflix at least but i’ll find a way.
