I’m not sure where to start for this. There have been a lot of thoughts floating around in my head this last 7 days, and almost none of it has been good.
So I’ve been watching Critical Role a lot in the past month. I missed out on the early parts of the campaign, but I spent this last month catching up to the livestream, and watched the rebroadcast last week for the first time on stream.
Now, I’ve been doing shit at uni this year. I’ve missed a lot. A whole lot. I’m stressed, my depression is pretty bad and just in general life is spiralling out of control a little bit.
And so, in the last month, while I’m dealing with that, I’ve been getting more and more into Critical Role. It’s become very important to me. It’s helped me keep it together and not break down completely. So when I heard the news about Orion’s departure, especially given the shady way G&S handled it, I broke down and started crying. For what I think was the second time this year.
It felt like the group, as we know it, was falling apart. Ashley left for work, and now Orion has left (or been kicked out, if you believe certain rumours) and it reminded me of how helpless I’ve been feeling and how out of control I’ve become. Critical Role was so important to me, and it still is, but it feels slightly hollow without Orion.
The other main thing (other than my life falling to pieces in general) on my mind this week has been Lucy. An asexual person I met on tumblr, and we were conversing for a couple of months, and then, nothing. It’s been a little over a month and I haven’t heard back from her. I sent her a couple of messages to ask if she’s okay, but no response.
She hasn’t updated her tumblr either. I’m slightly worried, to be honest. She wasn’t always quick to reply but it wasn’t normally more than a couple of days. I’m not sure if she decided she didn’t want to talk to me anymore and just didn’t tell me, if she gave up on tumblr, again, without telling me, or if something major has happened, like she got in an accident or something.
And to be honest, it’s gotten me down. We didn’t get that close, I mean we were only talking for a couple of months (yes I hear you screaming Katie but let’s not go there), but I didn’t get any feeling that she didn’t like me or hated talking to me. I keep coming back to previous experiences and how I’ve never had the sense that somebody doesn’t want to talk to me until they explicitly state it, at which point I feel like I’ve been punched in the gut and winded.
And, you know, it made me wonder which would feel worse. My current state of not knowing if something terrible has happened to her, or if I found out she was fine and has just been ignoring my messages. It’s a question I’ve asked myself a lot of times in the last 3 or 4 years, and it’s beginning to worry me.
See, this is how all of my relationships end. We talk for a while, I feel like things are going well, and then suddenly, I find out things have been going terribly, or I don’t find out anything at all. One day, I get nothing but silence. I’ve never had a close relationship with anyone. You might count Oli, but I’m not sure we’re close. We’re just comfortable. Aside from that, every person I know, I either see them very infrequently and very rarely talk outside of those meetings, or I talk to them more for a period of less than a year, and then, for whatever reason, it ends.
The only relationship in which the other person didn’t break down communication was Steph, and even then she never texted me, I was always the first to text. In the end she reminded me too much of the Dark Times that I couldn’t keep it up any longer, and she never tried to keep it going either.
I think what I’m trying to get at, and this is something I’ve been coming back to an awful lot this year, is that I have difficulty thinking of people who would miss me, were I to die. Sure, some number of my friends would feel sad at my passing (I hope), but who among them would actively miss me. Who would lie awake at night wondering why I had died so young. Who would it impact. And to be honest, the only people I can think of are my parents.
Now this is sounding a bit like a suicide note, and that’s made me realise I should check in with my doctor, but the point is valid, I think. I’ve spent this year trying to work out who’s lives I have an impact on. It’s a very small number. My parents have to do a lot and endure so much stress to keep me going. My home friends only see me at holidays and I almost never speak to them outside of IRL meetings which aren’t that frequent. My uni friends see me once a month or so, a couple of them see me ~weekly, but again, I don’t have other contact with these people. The people I text are my Mum, my Dad and my mentor.
To be honest, unless it was passed around a lot, I struggle to think of people who would even notice if I died. Honestly, nobody talks to me. If I went out in my car and took some pills, they’d probably call my parents. But then what? My Mum would probably tell Oli’s Mum who would tell him. And it might get from him to Matt and then around the group back home, but who in Southampton would find out? More than half my life is spent here, and nobody I know would find out if I died. I affect next to no one. And as a social person, who needs to be surrounded by close friends, that hurts. A lot. And I just feel so tired all the time, and I’m so far behind on uni and I just can’t see any way forward. I can’t see a future for myself. I don’t want to commit suicide, but I just don’t know what to do anymore
