There’s a common misconception that my job as a makeup artist is “just one day.” Like, I just show up and do makeup and then I’m done. But what most people don’t understand is that for most creative freelancers, our jobs begin the minute you call us to book us. Preparation is key to a successful execution the day of a shoot - from mood boards to product research, to sanitation of the entire kit and choosing which products to use for a specific Client, to packing said kit. It’s not just “ok, I’m free that day.” It’s an entire process. Then, it’s packing everything (plus some bc somehow we’re asked for the most random things), planning travel logistics (bc sometimes you can’t take ur main products as a carry on) and lugging it wherever we need to go. And then we carefully do our thing during the shoot - keeping in mind what the original direction was when we were booked, how it might have evolved, how the moods of the client and talent are with the look, how the artistic director and PD are feeling, etc. etc. And then we wrap and we go home, and clean and reorganize it all again while perhaps prepping for the next, completely different job that needs the same amount of detailed attention. And we love it, we do! But that’s also why as we become more experienced we become more discerning about the jobs we are able to take. And why it’s frustrating to have our time “wasted” with last minute cancellations. (Praise the powers that be for what’s called a “kill fee.”) We know our abilities and our strengths. It’s not just about money or recognition. It’s about being able to create our art and make a living doing it. So I forgot to mention that when I went to the MUFE WinterLounge the other night - I won the rafffle! Inside were some MUFE treats and I added some of the new #UHD products to my collection!
