Congratulations Sovereignty on the Kentucky Derby victory!
Journalism looked every bit the winner when he hit the lead at the top of the stretch, but Sovereignty was right beside him and would not be denied as they battled to the wire. Baeza came flying up behind them for a fast closing third with Final Gambit in his wake. Owen Almighty was the last speed horse standing, holding off the rest of the field to get fifth.
This year's (once again temporarily shorter) Test of the Champion brings a rematch of the Kentucky Derby favorites! Will Journalism become the first since 2005's Afleet Alex to win the Preakness and the Belmont, but not the Derby? Or will Sovereignty become the first since 1995's Thunder Gulch to win the Derby and the Belmont, but not he Preakness?
We predict Journalism will come out ahead this time, but with Baeza also racing again, the top three are looking to be the same as the Derby! Unless Bob Baffert's Rodriguez can hang on to an early lead . . . .
We are also coming full circle with the last of my glamour shots with my fabulous pansy fascinator for the Derby last month! 🌸👒🐢
#Sovereignty takes the roses at the 151st #KentuckyDerby, with #JuniorAlvarado aboard, his first Derby win in six rides. #Journalism placed, #Baeza showed. Congratulations to all!
