an answer right out of Peter Hale's book would be along the lines of the blunt, cruel honesty of 'i rather not,' yet it felt like that manner of rudeness had no place with her. truthfully, he almost felt sorry that he had to leave. even more so when she'd pleaded for the opposite. she was not meant to have seen him; it was supposed to have been a clean exit. clearly, he'd misjudged how light a sleeper she was. still with his shirt in hands and only a few steps from the door, peter assumes an apologetic stance.

it wasn't a complete lie. his nephew had called, but only to ask about something so frivolous that peter could not even bring himself to remember. the fact was, he'd found himself dangerously close to caring. hell, he might even be doing so already. and that simply wouldn't work; it was not in his nature to allow that kind of sentiment. it gave too much space for weakness, caring for someone other than himself. he needed to stop it before it was too late.
