If you’re not a fan of Robert Webb then don’t worry, neither is he! I really enjoyed this, he writes honestly and lucidly about (toxic) masculinity. Some lines have really stuck with me: ‘I express anger when what I’m actually feeling is shame’ and ‘Some men don’t recover from masculinity at all.’

I pretty much never buy new books. You can get any book you want in a charity shop, if you are prepared to wait long enough and look hard enough. But after being reduced to tears by #robertwebb on the iplayer (at Hay) I have had my heart set on buying his book #hownottobeaboy for my son. It’s all about the so-called rules of being a man: don’t cry, drink beer, play rough and don’t talk about feelings. There might be a bit of wanking, too. I wandered into @hatchardspiccadilly last night, ‘I can’t remember the name of the book or the author, but...’ And, of course, the excellent staff there found the book. Thank you to the young woman on the till, and the Peep Show fan and possible Peep Show convert in the basement for indulging me. An absolutely superb purchase before setting off on a business trip last week. I can’t recommend it enough. Funny, heartwarming, and in places, brutally close to my own heart. My first read had me wishing I had a highlighter pen, so I could cover some paragraphs and revisit them later.

Oh well, I guess I can read it again.

4*, but occasionally hit 5* as I fought to push back the tears, while sat in a packed airport.
