Stressed Out? Real effects of stress on the body and mind...
It's amazing how the tiniest bumps in the road can start to bring in physical stress that starts in the legs, creeps up the spine right into the shoulders, settles there and camps, then spreads up the neck into the jaw and lands in the temples. Pain, fatigue & irritability are just a handful of symptoms caused by holding on to stress. Below is some information about stress:what causes it, what are its effects and how to manage it.
What is Stress?
Stress is a measure of your mental and physical resistance to circumstances beyond your control. Stressors are threats, demands, or changes to which you attach special, significant importance, and with which you may struggle or feel uncertainty.
Common stressors include the loss of a vital connection through death or the emotional longing for someone who is unavailable, especially a spouse or family members; financial distress; being overworked at your job, at home, or in your studies; caretaking; workplace and personal relationship struggles; divorce; and other fears of loss and inability to meet external demands. Or a culmination of all the little "irritants" that occur for most of us every day of our lives.
Why is this bad?
Acute stress is the leading cause of sudden death, especially in young healthy people with no evidence of coronary disease. But it can fell people at any age.
Chronic stress causes heart disease. It is a clandestine cause − not fat or cholesterol − of heart attacks and arterial disease. It contributes to high blood pressure (hypertension), a risk factor for cardiovascular problems such as heart failure and sudden cardiac death and heart enlargement.
Long-term depression significantly increases the risk of heart disease. Among other effects, it actually triples the disease producing effect of smoking.
In cardiology, stress is a grim reaper that abruptly ends life by rupturing unstable plaque in a vital vessel or by triggering a lethal disturbance in heart rhythm.
When you get fired up emotionally, you’re putting a torch to your arteries. Medical research has repeatedly documented the danger of anger, chronic stress, and the negative emotional states. Yet these risk factors are rarely addressed by doctors.
What can I do to lessen my stress?
There are many simple and effective ways to calm the mind and control strong reactions to stressful situations.
Physical Activity - exercise is a wonderful way to "get out of your head" and positively harness energy that could otherwise be directed towards an emotional reaction to stress. The physical activity doesn't have to be high impact. Yoga, a brisk walk, or an hour of gardening can do the trick to burn off excessive emotional energy.
Meditation - sitting quietly for even a few minutes every day can help you filter through the mind's clutter. One objective of meditation is mental clarity: the ability to differentiate between real concerns and issues vs. becoming reactionary to small incidents that don't really impact life in any meaningful way. In other words, meditation can help you stop making mountains out of mole hills.
Return to nature - Escape the urban jungle by finding a natural place. It could be the greenbelt behind your office, a walk though the woods or on the beach, or sitting in your back yard under your favorite tree. Nature views and sounds are grounding, and natural elements of earth, wind and water are calming for the mind and relaxing for the body. This yogi loves to spend time watering the garden while listening to the sounds of the bugs and the birds and watching the little lizards and frogs frolic in the grass. I feel more relaxed just writing that statement!
Me time - With all the demands of family, work, school and community, it can be challenging to carve out that me time. Unfortunately, nobody is handing out me time...you have to take it for yourself by setting aside the time to read a book or engage in your favorite hobby. Pamper yourself with a massage, or attend a sound bath meditation. Soaking in a nice hot CBD Oil-infused bath can do the trick too - more on that next!
CBD Oil - a recent study showed that cannabis oil may regulate the emotional response to trauma and therefore prevent further stress. This is because it minimized the stress receptors in the hippocampus and amygdala (areas in the brain) that combined, are both responsible for processing our senses and emotions.
Artisanal Apothecary recommends soaking in the bath with one of our CBD Oil Fizzing Bath Bombs, or Bath Crack Bath Salts for easing tension and stress. Staycation is ideal to combine Me time, Meditation and CBD Oil therapy all at once!
If you have found your way to this blog post, you have probably already been hearing about the controversy regarding medical marijuana. While both sides have good arguments, a shift is occurring and according to a recent poll by Pew Research Center 61% of Americans believe that all marijuana should be legalized.
This is due in part to the latest research regarding the potential health benefits of cannabidiol, or CBD for short.
Cannabidiol is actually one of 80 different cannabinoids that make up the marijuana plant. While it’s true that CBD is one of the main ingredients in the drug, it’s not the one that causes its well-known highs and addictions.
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the main psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis, and causes the sensation of getting “high” that’s often associated with marijuana. However, unlike THC, CBD is not psychoactive.
In fact, according to a World Health Organization report, CBD does not cause a high or have the potential for addiction and dependence. The drug seems to be well-tolerated in the patients who take it, but it may interfere and cause reactions with other current medications. Many reported side effects are mild, though, including dry mouth, low blood pressure, dizziness and drowsiness.
This quality makes CBD an appealing option for those who are looking for relief from pain and other symptoms without the mind-altering effects of marijuana or certain pharmaceutical drugs.
CBD oil is made by extracting CBD from the cannabis plant, then diluting it with a carrier oil like coconut or hemp seed oil.
It’s gaining momentum in the health and wellness world, with some scientific studies confirming it may help treat a variety of ailments like chronic pain and anxiety.
According to Medical News Today, here is what we know about the key potential benefits of usin CBD:
Arthritis pain
A study in the European Journal of Pain used an animal model to see if CBD could help people with arthritis manage their pain. Researchers applied a topical gel containing CBD to rats with arthritis for 4 days.
Their researchers note a significant drop in inflammation and signs of pain, without additional side effects.
People using CBD oil for arthritis may find relief from their pain, but more human studies need to be done to confirm these findings.
Multiple sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease that affects the entire body through the nerves and brain.
Muscle spasms are one of the most common symptoms of MS. These spasms can be so great they cause constant pain in some people.
One report found that short-term use of CBD oil could reduce the levels of spasticity a person feels. The results are modest, but many people reported a reduction in symptoms. More studies on humans are needed to verify these results.
Chronic pain
The same report studied CBD use for general chronic pain. Researchers compiled the results of multiple systematic reviews covering dozens of trials and studies. Their research concluded that there is substantial evidence that cannabis is an effective treatment for chronic pain in adults.
A separate study in the Journal of Experimental Medicine supports these results. This research suggests that using CBD can reduce pain and inflammation.
The researchers also found that subjects were not likely to build up a tolerance to the effects of CBD, so they would not need to increase their dose continually.
They noted that cannabinoids, such as CBD, could offer helpful new treatments for people with chronic pain.
Other uses
In the United States, CBD oil has varying legality across different states and at a federal level, yet it currently has a range of applications and promising possibilities.
These include:
smoking cessation and drug withdrawal
treating seizures and epilepsy
anxiety treatment
reducing some of the effects of Alzheimer's, as shown by initial research
antipsychotic effects on people with schizophrenia
future applications in combating acne, type 1 diabetes, and cancer
Although more research is required to confirm some uses of CBD oil, it is shaping up as a potentially promising and versatile treatment.
In June 2018, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved one form of CBD as a treatment for people with two rare and specific kinds of epilepsy, namely Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) or Dravet syndrome (DS).
Takeaway
While many studies have suggested CBD oil is helpful for pain, more research is necessary, especially in long-term studies with human subjects.
However, CBD oil does show a lot of potential for pain relief. Anecdotal evidence suggests that it can be used to help manage chronic pain in many cases.
CBD oil is especially promising due to its lack of intoxicating effects and a possible lower potential for side effects than many other pain medications.
People should discuss CBD oil with their doctor if they are considering using it for the first time.

We get asked all the time about how we personally enjoy the benefits of using our own products. I've been using this for about six weeks, and here is my personal insight into the product.
Oh, and to answer one of the most common questions: How long will a jar of body butter last? Answer:My husband and I both share 1 - 8oz jar of body butter, and after six weeks it's still half full. That's what we mean on the label when we say a little goes a long way!
I rub it on any place that is achy or sore. I'm a yoga teacher during the week and a bartender on the weekends, so that means pretty much everywhere on my body.
I put it on my face after washing it. It does go on a little bit greasy, BUT it soaks in after just a minute, and my complexion has never looked better. I suffer from Rosacea, and I haven't had any red or dry, scaly patches since I started this regimen.
I put it on bug bites/stings. I'm hyper-sensitive to things like mosquito and ant bites. I get huge, red welts that itch, sting and take forever to heal. Now if I get a bite, I put a little body butter on the affected spot and instantly the itching and stinging stop. The red welt never gets huge, and the aftermath of the attack is usually gone within a few hours.
I put it anyplace I might bruise after impact. Now I don't bruise like a peach as some of you out there do, but I did almost knock myself unconscious a few weeks ago. I'll spare you the details of my stupidity, but tears immediately sprang to my eyes, so that's how bad the knock to my noggin' was. I grabbed the butter and applied three times daily for two days. I could feel a small lump, but I never bruised and I wasn't in pain.
I put it on my feet before a long bar shift. I work in a very high-volume bar, and I'm not a spring chicken. Most nights after my shift, my feet would be on fire until I started using body butter on them before putting my socks and shoes on. Now I get home and sometimes I forget that haven't taken off my shoes right as I get inside the door.
I use it on my neck, shoulders and low back every morning and evening since I had my car accident a couple of weeks ago. Yep, rear-ended by a monster truck going 35mph when we were just starting to move as the traffic light turned green. Our German-engineered mid-size sedan was totaled, and I've been going to the chiropractor four times a week since. He's doing the best he can to help me, but it's the body butter that allows me to get through my days and nights with ZERO pain medication for my diagnosed whiplash!
Other folks have been telling us that they are managing pain, arthritis, anxiety and insomnia by using the CBD Whipped Body Butter. We're also getting reports of spider vein reduction, wrinkle reduction and psoriasis control as an added benefit from using the butter.
Ready to try it for yourself? We now have an unscented version too!
