So, I immediately went out, $4500 camera and $6500 lens in hand, no big deal, and began taking pictures. Except the camera was a 1999 digital relic, and it was given to me by a family member. The wonderful thing about a photograph is its selectivity. Many people refer to that selectivity as lying or manipulation, but the selectivity in photographs is part and parcel of all we do. To paraphrase Anne Frank, she referred to finding beauty around her, even while trapped by systematic oppression. That’s selective on a scale I can only imagine.
.
In the same way, celebrating a small fragment of a scene doesn’t require deception. It can be used that way, and those who habitually refuse to do any research are easily trapped. But, far and away, its greater purpose is to illustrate something we cannot see when looking at a large, distracting scene.

My journey into photography didn’t start with 35mm (well, strictly speaking, it did, but I’m referring to understanding), 4x5, or “full-frame” digital. It started with this guy. The lowly, “that’s not a DSLR” HP 912 (via Pentax).
.
Of course, I quickly started to obsess over megapixels and lenses, and though when exposed well, this 2.1MP camera actually produces surprising 8x10 prints, it quickly wasn’t enough.
.
Know what’s funny?
.
Looking back at that early work, I can realistically say that my most inspired Art to date was shot with this camera - old-as-bark though it is. My vision for what captured my imagination was shockingly quickly overruled by the “need” to print larger, to have better low-light performance, and more dynamic range.
.
Now, I’m not saying that those items aren’t necessary or beneficial, but I suspect that I’m one of millions of promising photographers who let marketing, reviews, or want destroy imagination and inventiveness.
.
I am of the guilty party.

Previous to our social-media / news-media junkie culture, it was typically unquestioned social mores. Now it’s the sound-bite / snippet of unquestioned research by questionably funded individuals.

(No, I’m not referring to Trump. The biggest problem with Trump is the attention the Democrats give to him. Take away his hyperactive media attention, and you take away the man.)
