UM Track By Track : : Living Ghosts - ‘The Thought of Giving Up’

Unsigned Oxnard, California, post-hardcore outfit Living Ghosts (founded by former HRBRS guitarist Ray Bolado) released their EP The Thought of Giving Up was released earlier this month on Bandcamp. The band was kind enough to write a track by track of the EP for UMusicians. Read the track by track below!

Like The Sea // Originally, we had 2 vocalists in this band including myself and my ex girlfriend. This song was going to be called “I Can’t Forget”. We had the plans of opening the EP w/ an introduction of the storyline being sung by two lovers; setting the mood for a love that has grown bittersweet. Unfortunately, things weren’t working out between her & I, which lead us to only having one vocalist. I ended up rewriting the lyrics for this song & changing the name to, “Like The Sea”. I found it interesting how this revision shaped a new backbone/story to the entire EP. Oddly enough, the heartbreak that I went through/am still going through sat perfectly with the rest of the songs both lyrically & musically. Arrows // We released a spoken word EP last year in September previous to this one, titled, ‘Forever & A Day’. The idea behind the concept for that EP is quite relatable to this one, but more focused on letting you inside a mind of a broken hearted soul. I recorded that spoken word demo the second week of a break up. I wanted to do something similar with this song, so we added a short spoken-word part in the middle, accompanied with some screaming & soft singing. This song is dedicated to anyone who has ever felt alone in this world & has had suicidal thoughts because of that feeling. You’re not alone. Falling Apart // This song is definitely my favorite out of the 6 tracks on ‘The Thought of Giving Up’. It was supposed to be a duet all the way through, but we managed to change the structure of the song lyrically to better fit the use of one voice. Although, we did keep the ending as a duet with the help of our talented friend, Jazzmine Brazil. I wrote this one about the simplicity of love & how it can get complex at times. Falling in love seems to be easy for most; for others, it takes some time to let someone in on a more personal & deeper level. Sometimes we are willing enough to go through the uncertainty of hope; a risk of the heart. Toward the end of the song, when Jazzmine’s vocals come in, you can get the emotional feel of those two similar, yet different mindsets unknowingly wanting the same thing—which is to be loved. Light // This was the first song written for the EP, it has come a long way from being just an acoustic track recorded in a garage, late winter of 2012. The lyrics of this song isn’t necessarily about a love getting away, it’s about a love you hoped would stay. The concept of the EP was also inspired by “Light”. Miles Away // This is one of the songs that fell perfectly into place with everything that went on in my life last year. This track deals with disconnecting from reality ‘caused by a depressive state of mind. In this case, the reason behind the depression is from having a broken heart. The only thing on your mind is a memory of once was; finding yourself left restless at night. Giving Up // This one took a while to figure out lyrically. At first, this song only had a chant/chorus (“You left me waiting forever & a day”), but we were aiming to have this song define the concept of ‘The Thought of Giving Up’ in it’s entirety. The vocals that come in after the first phrase of the chant/chorus is what we decided fit best for the outro of the EP.
