How to make interactive comics and cartoons in your web browser
If I wrote a book ”How to make interactive comics and cartoons with HTML, CSS, and JS,” would you read that?
Meet an Animator: Waldemar Shuur
Where do you live? Rotterdam, The Netherlands Did you study animation at a school or are you self-taught? I'm self-taught. How long have you been animating, and what made you become interested in it? I started animating at the age of 12. I've always loved drawing and watching cartoons, so it was an early passion of mine Do any particular styles or animators inspire your work? Nothing in particular. I get my ideas from the strangest of places. Besides animation, what are you interested in? Mythology, history, cultures, prehistoric life and b-movies. Waldemar's Animatron projects can be found here; check out the rest of his work on his website!
Meet an Animator: Shmuel Landesman
Where do you live? I live in Bat-yam, Israel Did you study animation at a school or are you self-taught? I studied animation in IAC Israeli Animation college in Tel-aviv; design and illustration I learned on my own. How long have you been animating, and what made you become interested in it? I have been animating for two years professionally. I loved drawing since I was a little boy and dreamed of being an animator and seeing my drawings come to life. Do any particular styles or animators inspire your work? I love hand-drawn classic animation. I'm inspired by many animation shorts I see online, especially the 'Making Of' videos of animations, they are a great way to learn new things. Besides animation, what are you interested in? I am very interested in character design and directing. Shmuel's Animatron projects can be found here; check out the rest of his work on his website!
Here's How to Use All Those Fancy Fonts You've Been Missing
Even though there are thousands of different fonts out there in the world, only a handful of them are supported in all browsers and across all operating systems. So, those are the only fonts we can currently include in the Animatron Editor - otherwise, fonts in a project that look great on one user’s computer might not display well on another user’s computer, and that wouldn’t be great.
We’re currently working on a solution to this problem that will allow Animatron users to upload any font of their choosing into their project, just like uploading an audio track or an image file. When the project is published, the font will be included (again, just like with an audio track or an image file). This guarantees that the text will display identically anywhere that the project is viewed!
In the meantime, though, there’s a workaround for users who want to use a non-standard font: convert the text into an object (I used Illustrator in this example), then upload the object file into Animatron.
Here’s how to do it:
Type out whatever you want using the font you want to display.
Select the “Create Outlines” option from the Type menu.
The text is now an object and is no longer editable as text. Here’s what it will look like:
Once you’ve converted the text to an object, save it in SVG format and open the Animatron project you want to include it in. Go to Import in the main menu, then select the file from your computer ...
And there you have it! Your text will appear in the font you chose, and it’ll display in that font in your published project, no matter what browser or operating system a viewer is using.
Meet an Animator: Ely Romo-Anler
Where do you live? Currently I live close to Uppsala, Sweden. Did you study animation at a school or are you self-taught? I took an animation workshop that got me my first job in animation. After that, knowing that I needed to improve, I enrolled to college to study traditional animation in Canada. But even after that I am still learning from other people around me and constantly pushing myself and doing my best. I’ve been very lucky to meet people willing to teach me and guide me. How long have you been animating, and what made you become interested in it? My path in animation has been very long. I think I’ve been drawing all my life. I used to tape cartoons when I was little and draw from the TV. In high school, I met a girl who told me she wanted to study animation. That was the first time I heard about animation as a profession and I knew that’s what I wanted to do. Do any particular styles or animators inspire your work? I watch every animation that comes across, I love the old Looney tunes cartoons and the Miyazaki’s movies but I think I refer more to the old Disney animations for inspiration. I keep watching the Silly Symphonies, Alice in Wonderland, Fantasia, The Sword in the Stone, etc. Also I love illustration, like for children’s books, I always go to that section of bookstores and libraries, although now we have more resources to find inspiration through the internet. Besides animation, what are you interested in? Other than animation and illustration, I like knitting, baking and kittens :) Ely's Animatron projects can be found here; check out the rest of her work in her online portfolio!
Meet an Animator: Tab Lambert
Where do you live? Ottawa, Ontario Did you study at a school or are you self-taught? I have an animation degree, but learnt a lot more once I got into the animation field. How long have you been animating, and what made you become interested in it? I have been in the industry for 2 years, now but I went to school for 3 years and have been animating pretty much since high school. What made me interested into going into animation is actually a bit peculiar, I guess: I've always had good artistic skills but I didn't know if I wanted to be an artist for a living. I wanted something challenging for myself. I saw the breakdown of an animation one year on one of those "behind the scenes" footage. I saw how complex and challenging it looked. I instantly fell in love and started looking for courses that could provide me with knowledge on how to get into the animation world. I'm still far from the greatest animator but I have a lot of fun and I love what I do. Do any particular styles or animators inspire your work? Well, for the work I do with Animatron, I try to go more simplistic, like the intros to movies such as "Hard Candy" and "Catch Me if you Can." As for my regular work, I really enjoy many different styles. For the animated short that I put up on my blog, I tried to take some inspiration from the UPA animation era - more artsy, but also with a touch of traditional WB cartoony timing. My style and inspiration all depends on the project itself. I try and keep an open mind on any given project to let it flow freely and look natural. Besides animation, what are you interested in? Other than drawing, painting and animating. I also enjoy video / board games. I like biking / walking / generally any form of exercise. I also love reading, playing freeform piano and even a bit of photography from time to time. Tab's Animatron projects can be found here; check out the rest of her work on her blog, Tumblr, and Vimeo!
