I once had to shut down a conversation real quick when a person said to me "I don't consider you as disabled" because she's chronically ill and doesn't identify as disabled herself.

I literally have paperwork that says I'm disabled. My disabled parking permit is a "permanent" one.

I just don't think it's anyone's place to tell me "actually I don't think of you as disabled, you're just chronically ill" when I, in fact, live with conditions that are debilitating, that very much disable me, which is why I say I'm disabled.

Not to mention how often internalized ableism come into play when someone refuses to give themselves the "disabled" label because they think it's a bad thing to call someone, and they also don't want to associate with the image that their mind conjures up every time they see or hear the word "disabled".

I think the most disappointing thing about it is that there are so many potential sources and materials that could have been covered by such an article talking about young people, disabilities, and current trends.

Why are we seeing more young people using mobility aids and identifying as disabled? How about a global pandemic that has left a not insignificant percentage of populations across the globe with long term health problems? Or that we are seeing more education, more awareness being raised, more talking about topics and issues related to disabilities, and more advocacy among disabled communities leading to increased visibility and openness?

Instead, you decided to go with ableism, fake-claiming, victim blaming, and throw in some eugenics while you were at it.
