I absolutely love Valka but it bothers me when people say she loves Hiccup as much as Stoick and Gobber. Stoick loved him for 20 years while she has only loved him for a few days. Even Snotlout has cared for Hiccup longer than Valka has. Sorry but it just bothers me that shes suddenly Hiccup's one and only person who understands him. Sure they share the same passion but Hiccup would go to Gobber before Valka. Not saying Valka and Hiccup will not become best friends, they will but with time.

Okay, first of all--let's just straight that Valka has also loved Hiccup for 20 years. She loved the son she left behind and she loved him despite the fact that he was another brutish viking (as far as she knew). A mother's love is unconditional; in this case at least. She couldn't help loving him.
The sort of love is different, yes. Stoick has the relationship with Hiccup that Valka doesn't... and possibly will never have. It's different and by far stronger. As much as Stoick loved and missed his wife, as much as Hiccup adored and pined for his mother, in any dire situation they would choose the other. Stoick raised Hiccup. Gobber practically raised Hiccup. They will be (would be) the ones he'd go to for just about anything outside of dragons.
Hiccup and Valka have a lot of grounds to cover. She's something new, not something old and comforting, and his trust in her is not unconditional. For Freya's sake we even see it in the movie... one montage of bonding and Hiccup still finds things to roll his eyes at towards her.
