Huallasaurus Rozadilla et al., 2022 (new genus)
(Select bones of Huallasaurus australis, from Rozadilla et al., 2022)
Meaning of name: Huallasaurus = duck lizard
Species included: H. australis (type species, previously in Kritosaurus)
Age: Late Cretaceous (Campanian–Maastrichtian)
Where found: Los Alamitos Formation, Río Negro, Argentina
Notes: Huallasaurus australis was a hadrosaurid (duck-billed dinosaur) and is known from numerous specimens. It was originally described in 1984 as a species of Kritosaurus, a genus otherwise known only from North America, and was later suggested in 2010 to be the same species as Secernosaurus koerneri from the Colhue Huapi Formation of Argentina. More recent studies, however, have reaffirmed its distinction from Secernosaurus.
In a new study, the authors concurred with recognizing “Kritosaurus” australis as a separate genus from Secernosaurus, but also found that it was likely more closely related to fellow South American hadrosaurids Secernosaurus, Bonapartesaurus, and the also newly-named Kelumapusaura than to the type species of Kritosaurus (K. navajovius). As a result, they reassigned it to a new genus, Huallasaurus.
