Valencia oranges These are the classic juicing oranges, not much good to eat fresh, but the juice quality is excellent. Please note that they are fully orange (and the juice is sweet), even though the tree is located in a citrus greening hotspot. You can see from the picture that the tree is drought stressed (the curled leaves). (For those that don't know, HLB, or citrus greening, is currently devestating the citrus industry in Florida and is rampant in Los Angeles and Orange county in California. It has also been detected elsewhere in California. If you have trees with green-tinged fruits that taste bitter, this is a likely cause.) New research from University of Florida suggests phenolic compounds in the plants could confer resistance. See http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0981942817301493 Until there is further research, it is probably best to stop watering/irrigating citrus in areas with active psyllids (the insect spreading the disease) or in HLB quarantine areas. Aromatic compounds such as phenolics are known to increase in response to drought stress.
