HUANGLONG JADE

Huanglong jade is a variety of chalcedony*, so it is not what is commonly considered as jade in gemmology (ie. jadeite or nephrite), but is referred to as such in China, where certain valued gemstones have traditionally been called yu, "jade".
*Chalcedony is a cryptocrystalline mineral aggregate of quartz and moganite, mainly formed of SiO2. Chalcedony has a Mohs' hardness 6-7, a waxy luster, and may be semitransparent or translucent. It can assume a wide range of colors, but those most commonly seen are white to gray, grayish-blue or a shade of brown ranging from pale to nearly black. Chalcedony occurs in a wide range of varieties. Many semi-precious gemstones - such as carnelian, heliotrope, onyx and various agates - are in fact forms of chalcedony.

Huanglong jade is a relatively new recognised gemstone, first discovered in Supa River in Longling, Yunnan in 2004; today, gem-grade Huanglong jade is mainly produced in Xiaoheishan Nature Reserve, Longling County, Baoshan City, Yunnan Province and the surrounding Supa River Basin. Huanglong jade is currently enjoying equal popularity with Hetian jade and emeralds in China.
The main colors of Huanglong jade are yellow and red, as well as cyan white, black, gray, lanolin white, etc.
