Jasper: I won’t lie - some people will always have a special place in our hearts. But hearts are kind of unique that way, don’t you think? Someone who is a complete stranger can become so much more, seemingly in the blink of an eye.

Jerri/Delia: I don’t need a cappuccino every morning, yet I still have it.

Demarcus: Just because someone’s book smart doesn’t mean they actually have any brains.

Isobel: Some people are just a gift that keeps on giving, aren’t they?

Hubert: I guess some people just want to make their mark on the world. Even if it is by being known as the guy who rode through town naked on a wild animal.

“Hey, is she gone?” Hub asked when Autumn stormed into the kitchen.

“Finally, yes.”

“I figured I’d stay out of her sight and not fan those flames any more than needed. Plus, there was that cherry atrocity to deal with.”

“I can’t believe she brought a cherry pie into this home!” Autumn raged. “Is she out of her mind? I could sue her, you know.”

“I know. But all signs of the cherry invasion are now dealt with and the counter it was on is twice-disinfected. You’ve no need to worry. I’ve disposed of it,” her husband reassured her.

“Thank you. I was so not looking forward to dealing with it,” she leaned into him.

“We should get a dog again. A little warning about strangers approaching would be nice,” he proposed.

“Sounds like a plan. Want to join the others?”

“Are they finally here?” an excited voice came from the kitchen, followed by a woman who Anna would’ve placed to be around Jasper’s age. “It’s good to see you. And you must be Anna?”

“He told you about me?” she asked in surprise. 

“Oh yes, good things only, don’t worry. Welcome. Please feel at home,” she shook her hand and turned to the men. “We should eat now. It’ll be a while before Noe comes home and Ari’s already hangry.”

“Oof, that’s not a good thing,” Hub shook his head. “You know how she gets when she’s annoyed.”

“Is my cousin still terrorizing the whole town?” Jasper laughed.

“It’s no joking matter,” Autumn huffed. “I keep hoping she’ll get accepted to the soccer team this season - that girl needs something decent to use up her energy on. And Noe isn’t any better. Do you know what she did just the other week?”

“What?”

“Three of her classmates asked her out to prom, so she told them she’ll go with the one who successfully floods the principal’s office with water from the school’s pool. They went to flood the poor man’s office - and she went home. Said it was her method for weeding out the dumb ones.”

“And you must admit, it’s a working method,” Hub laughed. “Just kidding. But you must admit, she’s creative. Much like someone else we both know.”

From his smile, one could deduce he referred to his wife. She gave a half-amused smile in response. “Keep that up and you’ll be getting a half-portion of your dessert.”

“I love it. Your cousin brought me here because I definitely needed a break from the city life and boy, was he right!” Anna told her. “You have some of the most beautiful nature I’ve seen.”

“That we do!” the young woman answered proudly. “And a whole lot of wildlife. Which is pretty cool, provided people don’t do stupid stuff with them while drunk.”

“You still haven’t let him live that down, have you?” Jasper giggled, explaining. “Her cousin had a little much to drink once and decided to ride a wild deer.”

“Wouldn’t have been so bad if he didn’t do it buck ass naked,” Ari rolled her eyes. “Obviously, he lost control of the animal and it ended up giving him quite a ride. And a whole lot of people ended up ‘enjoying the show’.”

“Are you guys talking about Rod?” Autumn asked, joining them with Hub. “If only this was the dumbest thing he’s ever done...”

“Weirdly enough, I think he rather enjoys the reputation his behavior brought him,” Hub observed. “I guess some people just want to make their mark on the world. Even if it is by being known as the guy who rode through town naked on a wild animal. Speaking of animals, do you want to go out and see the horses?”

“Can we?” Jasper asked. “I want Anna to see the foal.”

“Let me show you around,” Autumn offered.

“It’s a lovely-looking home,” Anna complimented as they approached his family’s residence. In truth, she was a bit intimidated. The house was huge, with real horse stables and all... She had a bit of a shock when he told her this was where his Aunt and Uncle lived. Jasper himself never gave off that sort of a vibe, but what if his relatives were the stereotypical rich people who ended up thinking she was only with him for money? She wouldn’t know how to deal with this assumption. 

“I’m sure most of it is Autumn’s achievement. Hub himself would’ve been comfortable living in a cave,” he informed her. “Let’s see. They should be home.”

It didn’t take much time for someone to come to the door after they rang the bell. 

“Well, hello! Who do we have here? Jasper? And who is the lovely lady?” Anna found herself receiving an approving once-over from an older man who shared a strong resemblance with her boyfriend. So much for growing out of old habits, she thought.

“Hiya Uncle. This is Anna. Anna, this is Uncle Hub,” Jasper introduced them, noticing his uncle’s interest.

“It’s wonderful to meet you. Jasper told me so much about you and your family,” she put on her best casual smile. 

“I’m sure he has!” the man gave a hearty chuckle and turned his attention back to his nephew. “Come here, you. It’s high time you’ve visited us. We’ve all been missing you, kiddo.” 

After a big bear hug, he called into the kitchen, “Autumn! We’ve got company!”

“Speaking of friends, what happened with you and Johnny?” Jasper took the chance to make his inquiry.

“Did he ask you to help him weasel his way back into my good graces?” Autumn rolled her eyes. “Don’t do his dirty work for him, dear. He knows when he’s running his mouth and when he should shut up. And he knows we already put up with a whole lot of crap from him because he’s a friend. But sometimes, he really goes too far.”

Hub nodded, but didn’t say anything. Jasper figured it was the same old story, with Johnny making an off-color remark about his and Autumn’s age difference. It must’ve been quite bad to make Autumn that angry, though.

“Maybe he didn’t realize he was being too inappropriate?” Anna asked.

“Then he’s dumber than he pretends to be,” Autumn stated.

“Yeah, you’d think, 23 years later, he’d get over Mom picking Dad,” Ari complained. “I guess some people are just sore losers.”

“I don’t know. I think you two are too harsh on him,” Hub chimed in. “He only stated the facts. I am sixty and I really am not quite the sprightly young man I used to be. Sure, he could’ve been more tactful about it, but you know how Johnny is. Brash and straightforward.”

“Just because that’s his personality doesn’t mean he gets to be crude with how he words things,” Autumn huffed. “And I don’t have to feed him as long as he’s set on pissing me off. Of course, if he were to actually apologize instead of sending proxies...”

She gave a small smile. Autumn, while rather prone to holding grudges, was reasonable. She was just tired of her friend being inconsiderate towards her and her family.

“I’m sorry about this mess,” Hub told them as they gathered up in the living room. “This is on me. I should’ve locked the door, but it escaped my mind.”

“Don’t apologize, please,” Anna reassured him. “You’re not responsible for her behavior.”

“Maybe, maybe. And you two, don’t take any of the crap she said here personally either,” he told them knowingly. “Gracie’s just extra pissed these days over how things went for her in Starlight Shores, I’m sure.”

“You’re still convinced it was her?” his wife narrowed her eyes.

“I’m telling you, it was. It totally was!” he argued.

“Dad got hooked on those trashy celebrity news shows,” Ari explained. “He’s convinced he saw Gracie on one of them.”

“Don’t pretend you and your sister aren’t the ones who got me hooked on them,” Hub laughed. “But you should’ve seen them. Gracie and this other starlet. Or is it starlette? I don’t know how they spell it, but they were going at one another, swinging, punching. And the language! Some of their curses made me blush.”

“I know what you mean,” Ari nodded. “I saw a part of that episode too. The woman could’ve been her, yeah. She was accusing the other girl of sleeping her way to the role. I mean, she very well might’ve, it’s Starlight Shores, what do you expect? They don’t call it the casting couch for nothing.”

“Who threw the first punch?” Jasper asked, his eyes growing wide.

“They didn’t catch that part,” Hub admitted. “Could’ve been either one of them. The other girl was throwing as many punches back. I’m not surprised the fight was over a role - they kind of looked alike, from what I could see of both women.”

“Hmm, that would make sense,” Autumn understood. “Two women of similar appearance being considered for the same part, one got picked over the other. Was the other one younger than Gracie?”

“I really don’t know,” Hub admitted. “She must be pretty new in the industry though, because she didn’t seem familiar. Not that they could show the face clearly, with all the ruckus going on.”

“She was blonde, though. And had huge boobs,” Ari added. “That much anyone could see.”

“Ah... No wonder Gracie took so much offense,” Jasper understood. He and his uncle exchanged a look and burst into laughter.

“What’s so funny?” Anna asked in confusion.

“Sorry, it’s...” Jasper shook his head. His uncle only laughed harder.

“Gracie’s nickname around town is ‘Tits Out’,” Ari explained. Turning to her father, she told him, “Don’t worry on our account, our sensibilities are not so easily shaken.”

“It’s true,” Autumn sighed. “She does seem to use that as her weapon of choice.”

“Yeah, Ashton learned that the hard way,” Ari recalled.

“What happened with him and her?” Anna asked. They all kept mentioning something about Gracie making advances towards the guy.

“We were all here visiting for the winter holidays,” Jasper started to explain. “And there was this festival happening, with different performances. We were helping set up and Hub was actually going to perform with a song or two. Gracie must’ve taken a liking to Ashton, which none of us could’ve predicted - she usually goes for older guys. But at some point, she definitely had him cornered in just that manner.”

“You know, how in movies, some seductress might try to flaunt her assets by getting her impressive bust right up against the guy,” Ari continued. “I don’t know why they do it. It’s neither sexy nor seductive and it always comes off as creepy. If a dude did it, people would arrest him.”

“You girls found him, I remember,” Jasper nodded.

“Yeah, Noe did. And then she called me over and we got you to help. Poor Ash, he was so confused by it all!” she remembered. “How is he, by the way? I remember he was really sad after that breakup with his girlfriend, a few years ago. Still single?”

“As far as I know,” Jasper confirmed. 

“That’s too bad,” Autumn shook her head. “He shouldn’t let one romantic failure get him down. Life’s too short to pine after what could’ve been.”

“True words,” her husband agreed. “Maybe we could help him? Set him up with someone?”

“No, Dad!” Ari exclaimed. “Do you remember that time you tried to set your friend up - and the woman turned out to be his ex?”

“Yeah, but how was I supposed to know?” he complained. “But I get it, I’ll stay out of it.”
