I am happy that you remember the story so fondly. As for the “monsters,” think for a moment. Until recently the world was full of serious tales of monsters of many sorts. The tales mostly revolve around ones that acted in thoughtless or insane ways. What if those were the actual minority? That most of those monsters were NOT mad, ravening beasts?
They could easily hide in the modern world. Claiming that the mad ones were the result of our ancestor’s wild imaginations would be the first step in creating a safe cover. To pull it off, they would have not only be covert about their natures, they would have to carefully police their numbers.

This one was fun to write! The bit about Flutters cracking a bear’s ribs is canon to one of the official comic books, which Lauren Faust confirmed were canon to the show. It floated across my dash years ago with a couple of panels showing some of the others going to visit and finding her wrestling bears for fun! And winning!
The comment set off evil thoughts but alas, I have not time to write them before Christmas.
