For the person with the annoying D string, I've found that another cheap alternative is rosin! You don't have to use the high quality expensive rosin for it, just any of that cheapo stuff that comes with the cello (etc) Like the chalk recommendation, just apply the rosin to the peg, and it sticks really well. :)

Other ideas:
bordeaux-is-burning:In regards to the slipping peg, one of my friends would, like, shade the peg with a pencil. Just rub the pencil lead on the peg. Another had a chunk of rosin that she kept specifically to scrape and rub on her loose pegs.
