For Reasons™, I was checking out the official website of Hugo, Minnesota. Many, many moons ago, I'd made the journey to there with Hernaniste (whose tumblog sadly is no longer extant), to visit a development with streets named after Les Mis characters.

Back when I visited there, there was some debate over whether Hugo was named after Victor Hugo or a local(ish) railroad engineer with the same last name.

However, in 2020, an intrepid amateur historian decided to research why Hugo, Minnesota was named Hugo, and his rather extensive primary source research extended to contacting members of the family of both the railroad engineer and the guy who had submitted "Hugo" as the name of the local railroad station. Things that are vaguely disappointing at work that would take too long to explain to coworkers: Not being allowed to go to Victor Hugo Boulevard to pick up a targeted item.

Everyone keeps reblogging that photoset of the streets in Hugo named after Les Mis characters and saying they want to live there, and can you imagine how awesome that would be? A whole little subdivision filled with Les Mis nerds. Like endless discussions about characters and we can fill the square with art and fic and headcanons to share. And whenever you walk down the street singing any given lyrics, people start sticking their heads out the windows and joining in... (◡‿◡✿)

New evil life goal: to convince the city council of Hugo, MN to install a "dead end" sign at the entrance to the Grantaire cul-de-sac.
