I cannot overstate how important it is to be extremely serious at least some of the time about stuff you love. You don't need to make it into a joke to be allowed to talk about it. Whatever your thing is, it's allowed to matter to you enough that you cry about it and get angry in defence of it and don't care who sees you having feelings about it.

Love unironically. Love sincerely. Love wholeheartedly.

You're allowed to be serious.

You're allowed to care.

12 - When you have to make choices about what path to take in life, prioritise becoming someone that you'll like, respect, and enjoy being; because in the last analysis you can lose or get rid of absolutely everyone else but you've got to deal with yourself for your entire life.

28 - Honestly... craft supplies? Cross stitch kits, yarn, fancy paper, etc. I think that's my biggest collecting habit these days. (Also, fictional characters, but they at least take up minimal storage space unless they start demanding that I buy them things they like. Which has been known to happen.)

38 - It's a tie right now between In Extremo's Weckt die Toten which I just plain love (it's so good to sing along to!), and Within Temptation's Supernova which is firmly stuck in my head for reasons also, funnily enough, involving fictional characters...

PSA: if you don't have a cooperative pet mammal, a hot water bottle with a plush cover is an excellent second-best way to get something small and warm and furry to sit on your feet.

I think the worst thing they never teach you as a kid is that sometimes your best just won't be enough. That sometimes you'll do everything right and the universe will randomly drop a rock on your plans anyway. That sometimes, contrary to the movies, love and stubbornness alone won't win the day. That sometimes you'll end up breaking your promise even when you signed it in blood, sometimes you'll think you're helping and you'll hurt someone terribly by total accident, sometimes you will fail and sometimes it'll happen when someone else was relying on you. That things will happen that you can't take back and can't fix. That you cannot always get life right.

I wish that was something that adults gently explained to kids and taught them to be ready for and forgive themselves for, because finding it out the hard way as an adult sucks so much.

Sometimes when reading the internet makes me feel like the world is crumbling into a techno-dystopia where I will never have control over my own life ever again, I squeeze my eyes shut very tight and curl my fingers around something solid, and remind myself that the physical world still exists and it has rules that will apply no matter how much power rich madmen may think they have.

If all the electricity in the land were to go off right now, I could still light a candle and read a book; because paper and ink and wax and fire would still obey the same quiet laws as ever, and I have matches and a tealight in my everyday-carry bag. If there is another global supply chain crisis and I can't buy new clothes off the internet, I have needles and thread and old textiles I could cut up and yarn I can knit with, and I won't have to go naked any more than my ancestors did. If I can't order fruit from the supermarket, there are still blackberries growing over the fence in the back garden. I can hear an owl outside the window right now, literally not giving two hoots about any of the things that are terrifying me as I sit here.

The real world isn't over yet.

When it comes to doing the hard stuff in life there's only two truly effective motivational tools I've ever found and they are love and spite. Either you do it because something you love is depending on you, or you do it because someone you hate is gonna be pissed to see you succeed.

(Okay there's arguably a third, fear, because the dread of what will happen if you don't do it can work pretty well too; but it's super bad for your mental health and will give you burnout so 2/5 stars I can't endorse that one.)

I don't know who needs to hear this today but sometimes when you think you miss someone who wronged you, you're not missing them, you're just missing the things you got to experience because that person happened to bring them into your life; and these are two very different things.
