A scrimshawed human skull, expertly proportioned and set with real human teeth, the lower jaw articulated, surviving from the middle section of the nineteenth century.

This piece, made of whale bone and, as mentioned above, real human teeth, is a memento mori. No one knows whose teeth they are, but they could belong to a deceased comrade, the scrimshander himself, or anyone else for that matter.

However, it is very likely that this piece was made on board a ship. But as I said, it is exciting to wonder who the teeth belonged to and who the memorial is for. I suspect that it is a deceased comrade who is to be honoured here.
