I waited to answer this one for a little because I wanted to think on this answer!! First of all, you’re too sweet thank you!
Secondly, I’ve been asked a couple times about writing advice so check the ‘writing advice’ tag for more! Some of these might be repeats from those posts and from the posts from that writing tip reblog but that just means they’re extra important. Also like I’ve mentioned before, no english degree here, I’m just winging it as an amateur fanfic writer!! ❤️
some tips for writing (particularly while in school):
- school first, obvs. never sacrifice grades or exams for something you’re writing. I think that that is the most important tip, esp since most of my followers are younger.
- carve out a time that you can write. Unfortunately, for me my most creative hours are in the middle of the night. Being as I can’t stay up until 3 am anymore writing Traitor, my creative side has kind of been stifled. Find a time in your schedule that works for you
- if you can, write a little bit every day!! (this one i’m really bad at but we won’t talk about that 😂)
- when you think of something you want to write about, WRITE THAT SHIT DOWN IMMEDIATELY, WHERE EVER YOU ARE I don’t care if you’re literally seconds away from falling asleep you need to sit up and write an outline of that scene because other wise you will forget it and you will never forgive yourself.
- create two documents when writing something. on one document, outline your general plan before you even write the first scene. what do you want it to look like? who do you want the characters to be? how to they act/interact? not only can you go back and look over this outline and see how you wrote things differently or see where things changed. The other doc will be your ‘official’ one where the story actually is.
- this one goes with the point above but outline each chapter on your official doc!! I do this with all of traitor. It helps me set up the scenes and what I want to happen and if I think of dialogue at the time I won’t forget it when I go to sit down and write. I am not the type of writer that can just sit down and whip out a chapter. I take multiple days just thinking about it before words even get put on a page. Write everything you want to happen on your “official” doc, start writing and when you’re done copy+paste your chapter outline into your general outline of the story. You’ll thank me later because some times you’re going to want to go back and say, “now what did I want this part to mean?” and you’ll want to reference a particular feeling that you can’t remember and you’ll need it.
- take breaks!! If you don’t think what you’re writing is working, leave it and go take a walk, or get a drink. watch an episodee fo your fave show. just leave the story alone for a minute. it will come to you!
- last but not least and the most important of them all: do not delete anything. Write like chaos. write something that doesn’t make sense, just write what you think works. DON’T go back and read that chapter until all is said and done. DO NOT try and edit your story as you’re actively writing!! Focus on the storyline and the words first, you can edit the grammar and the sentence structure later.
I hope this helps a little!!! I’ll probably think of more ❤️❤️
