reasons to diet
my definition of a diet: to stop eating at around 60% capacity and if still feeling hungry, eat some fruit/vegetables/healthy stuff as an extra snack.
Ofc, food is good. I can never understand how people just eat to live and see it as a chore - if you have to eat in order to survive, why not enjoy it ? But the converse also applies; if you eat too much, you'll run the risk of not only growing a larger belly, but also affecting the way your body functions. As they all say: "too much of a good thing, is a bad thing."
The reasons why i "diet" (quotation marks because my diet is not really recognised by others as a regular diet) are kind of weird...
Its cheaper. I'm a cheap asian - as cheap as they can get. Having a smaller meal means less money, so when i have to eat out, and dont know what tastes good, i generally pick the smallest, cheapest item, then either a) finish my friends' leftovers (wasting food is a taboo) or b) go home and eat something else. My dad grows vegetables, and although some people might argue that the process of growing vegetables costs money - its still less than going out to eat. Plus, theyre organic homegrown veggies! Yummier and more healthy at the same time. Gooood as.
Its healthier. To be honest, i dont diet to lose weight. In fact, i've realised that no matter how much i eat (or how little i eat, for that matter..) my weight stays the same. Its been the same for about three years now, and i guess all the scale tells me is that this is my natural body weight, and i shouldnt be compelled to decrease that number. In my opinion, dietting helps to regulate that number, because it means that i keep my food intake steady, and this is important because when you overeat, your stomach expands so that next time, you'll eat more in order to feel full. I cant imagine my stomach expanding and contracting constantly being healthy, and thats why i diet. However! I have noticed that the size of my belly does change with regards to how much i eat, so this diet also helps with deflation (lol), as long as i do exercise to complement the process.
It makes me feel good about myself. I dont care if this is just the result of a placebo effect, but i give myself a pat on the back when i finish a meal that contains lots of healthy stuff, ie. a big bowl of fruit or vegetables, yoghurt, lots of water etc. Its not even hard for me to eat these foods because i'm "weird" (dubbed this by lots of friends) and like to eat vegetables (except carrots). Healthy stuff can also taste good when you know how to eat them. Also, you hear this all the time, but there are certain "brain-foods" that supposedly aid your thinking. Thats why I love having a bowl of fruit (like cherry tomatoes, grapes, canned peaches, cherries) next to me when im on the computer because apart from (supposedly; cant say i've really noticed a significant difference) stimulating my brain, a) they fill you up and you "eat less" for the main meal, b) theyre yummy, c) you almost subconsciously eat them all, then get disappointed when they are, and if theres more, you'll go get more and thus, eat more healthy stuff. All these thoughts just make me happy.
Of course, when situations arise, i let myself go of the diet restrictions. I mean, i live to eat. If i'm going out to eat at a hotpot buffet, or korean bbq, i'm not wasting that opportunity to have good food. Its good because my family doesnt go out to eat often, so i can keep in control of myself :P
