Headcanon: Cafe will willingly throw herself in front of Abyssal fire, knowing that the shells won't do anything to her. She'll even go so far as to taunt the Abyssals, swearing at them until every gun in the enemy fleet is emptying their magazines at her, dozens of shells bouncing off her titanium-A while her fellow shipgirls make a hasty retreat.

Yes, this probably does happen in situations with extreme opposition without seeing an abyssal above a Ru-class.
