I was asked what ‘actually divine’ was. This is my anwer.

Actually Divine is a tag on Tumblr. Oh boy, we’re about to go down a rabbit hole of sadness and insanity. Buckle up. And take everything I say with a grain of salt because I witnessed most of it secondhand, I only dove in for a little bit. 

“Actually divine” is a tag that a community of Tumblr came up with because other tags were populated with things they didn’t like. “Godkin” was populated by otherkin who weren’t ACTUALLY gods/goddesses, they just related to them. It was also well known by the ‘more sane’ parts of Tumblr, and so it was frequently mocked. “God” was filled with too much religious posting so they didn’t want that.

So they created ‘Actually Divine’ - a tag for people who believe they are legitimately gods, goddesses, angels, demons, and other spiritual beings. Sometimes people group it in as part of “Otherkin” sometimes people say they’re more than that. Sometimes people are both.

Now that it’s a more ‘well known’ tag, I don’t know if it is as active as it once was. It’s currently got a lot of “Get your head out of your ass you’re delusional and need medical attention” posts right now, so I suspect the people have mostly moved on. I believe “actuallydivine” and “factuallydivine” are also used now. The “Actuallydivine” tag with no spaces seems much more active from the ‘community’ but I’m not sure if that’s their current ‘main’ tag, or just a poor attempt at hiding from critics.

The beliefs range from “I was possessed and the spirit and I became friends ” to “I have always been a god, I transformed and got stuck, and now must die to be free” to “The voices in my head say I’m a god, it must be so” to “I am a prophet/prophets give me visions” and many more.

Most of the time, the ‘gods’ they claim to be aren’t mythological ones. They just claim they’re some sort of ‘pagan’ level god - god of wolves, or a bird spirit or what have you. 

Some do claim to be actual mythological gods/goddesses/angels though. The funniest -or saddest- part about this is that their information is almost always wildly inaccurate. It’s like “Oh I saw this God on Supernatural, that must be legit” and Supernatural’s representation is super far off the mark, and super obvious. So it’s not a case of “Oh no this is what the God is really like, the scriptures got it wrong” because you can clearly see they’re sourcing information from a TV show. I’m sure if you’re willing to dig deep enough you’ll find someone claiming to be Castiel. I found one person claiming they are the Judeo-Christian God, so it’s just a fucking grab bag.

These claims of godhood come from a few different types of people:

People that are legitimately mentally disturbed. They have schizophrenia or multiple personality disorder or something equally serious and it is manifesting as a voice telling them they’re a higher being. I think this was at one point the majority of the posters in the tag. Some of them will even openly admit that it’s a mental disorder and they can’t help it.

People that want attention and/or have their head way up their own ass. These are the people that just go “I’m super special. I must be above everyone else, I’m a god!” type of people. Given how Tumblr works, this is now probably the majority - or at least a 50/50 split with the above. This and the above are not exclusive, it can be a mental disorder and attention seeking behavior.

Trolls, as always. The tag is also currently populated with a lot of “These people are delusional” posts.

Going into the tag, you will see such delights as:

People asking to be worshiped, and setting up online ‘shrines’ where people can submit things and buy things for people.

People claiming dysphoria for their angel wings and/or feeling uncomfortable in a house because their ‘true form’ is much larger than the entire continent.

People saying that they should be allowed to get away with murder because someone needs to feed them sacrifices, and hey, it might as well be them.

It’s a sad, sad little place where people with serious mental health issues go to be told “No you’re just a god!” instead of “You need serious medical help before you hurt yourself and/or others.”

The thing I don’t get is why would divine beings use Tumblr of all platforms to communicate?
