Hellooooo! Oh shit, your blorbo fucked up. MASSIVELY. They need help. Like desperately. Who do they go to and why do they go to that person above anyone else?

it depends on the nature of the mess-up for Aella. Tempest is able to solve problems, and Aella trusts her with everything she has ... but differentiating between Captain Tempest and Mum Tempest is hard (for both of them), and Aella often will keep her mistakes to herself because she doesn't want to be in trouble.

this happens in the book, actually. Aella has the feeling she could have averted the stealing of their ship if she'd just spoken to Tempest, but they were both drunk and Aella was scared and just wanted the problem to Go Away. and now she feels responsible, and she feels like Tempest is angry with her, so she's gotta fix it.

but Aella is often not equipped to solve problems as effectively as Tempest, or without her. because also, she wants to be like Tempest, calm and capable and strong ... and she's afraid and impulsive and small. (this may be a point of her character arc in the book lol)

the person Aella goes to without fear of judgement is Theo. Theo won't judge her mostly because he rarely finds himself embroiled in the kinds of problems Aella does, so he's got no moral high ground. plus he's just ... not judgemental, and has no authority position. but he can't usually help her fix anything.

so she goes to Theo first, and then eventually to Tempest. or maybe Aria as an intermediate step. Aria is no-nonsense and will tell Aella like it is (that she done screwed up), but is able and willing to help. and Aella is a bit less ashamed to tell her what stupid thing she's done. the younger members of the crew are less judgemental (depending on the person) but less experienced. it's a delicate balance.

Aella and Theo have a very sweet dynamic, as do Tempest and Aria. 

I mentioned in this post that Aria is really good at switching between deep stuff and funny banter, and it’s at its best when she talks to Tempest, I think. they’ve known each other for 27 years and they’re super good friends. it just— I love them. 

15: Which OCs get along the worst with each other? 

uhhh Anvindr with everyone. because he’s a trashbag. 

Tempest and Theo don’t get on 100% at the start, but that’s mostly because Tempest is slow to trust and Theo is a bit scared of her. also she’s kind of cranky for the first few chapters for several reasons, which doesn’t help. but eventually they get on well too :)

here is seven lines from chapter 29 (“tempters’ bluffs”) 

Sequoia collapsed into her bunk. “That’s the first and last time I ever go as lookout in a place like that.” Some of the women murmured agreement and Sequoia continued, “Next time, I’ll make Aella do it.” 

The crew fell immediately silent, every creak of swinging hammocks suddenly deafeningly loud. 

“She’d probably enjoy it,” said Victoire. 

“She enjoys many dangerous things,” said Aria. The way she said ‘dangerous’ sounded more like ‘stupid’, but the statement lacked any real malice. 

can you tell I rather enjoy the Aella-Aria dynamic in which Aria gently roasts Aella to her face and behind her back but really she cares deeply? because I do. 

now technically the chain tag rules dictate that I should tag the same number of people as words that are in this excerpt but I’m not doing that I will tag seven. the number of sentences.

HURRICANE: character introduction: the crew of the Hurricane 

in total, the Hurricane is crewed by twenty women; in the story, you’ll meet ten of them. 

Aria (52; white British; 5′2″; grey hair and green/hazel eyes) 

kind but takes no crap, ship’s medic. generally stays out of fights. Tempest’s oldest and best friend. 

fun fact: she’s missing a leg and has a prosthetic 

Marisa (35; Spanish; 5′9″; dark hair and brown eyes) 

cheeky and friendly. skilled pickpocket. doesn’t like to admit to caring about others... but does. good at spotting romance and WILL tease the parties involved.

fun fact: good at picking locks and taught her skills to Aella

Cai (49; Chinese; 4′9′: black hair and dark brown eyes) 

relatively quiet and generally keeps to herself. somewhat stubborn. not concerned with material possessions, values people instead. 

fun fact: knits in her spare time

(extra note: Aria, Marisa, Cai, Tempest, and Aella formed the original crew of the Hurricane, 18 years pre-story) 

Victoire (33; French; 5′4″; honey-blonde hair and blue-grey eyes) 

friendly and caring. worked as a servant in a rich household and stowed away aboard the Hurricane (17 years pre-story). the others allowed her to stay, and she looked after Aella when she was a baby. 

fun fact: she has a heart tattoo on the inside of one ankle

Elizabeth (25; white British; 6′0″; dark brown hair and hazel eyes) 

ship’s cook. formerly a serving-girl in a tavern, but lost her job (circumstances will be revealed in the story; 8 years prior). Tempest offered her a job aboard the Hurricane. 

fun fact: she can and will fight with a ladle, though she can also use knives and a pistol. 

Emmy (23; German; 5′5″; light brown hair and blue eyes) 

guarded emotionally. skilled with a sword. joined the Hurricane four years prior to the story. falls into the group of “should not be left alone without adult supervision” (Emmy, Sequoia, Aella and later Addie) 

fun fact: inclined to wear oddly colourful outfits with little regard for coordination

Sequoia (20; Sri Lankan; 5′4″; black hair and dark brown eyes) 

inclined towards teasing but very friendly. like Aella, one of the Hurricane’s lookouts, and Aella’s closest friend (including in age). joined the crew four years prior after her old ship was wrecked. 

fun fact: wears a silver locket with a photo in it 

Addie (21; Scottish/Welsh; 5′8″; light brown hair and green eyes) 

massive people person, very friendly. capable fighter but prefers to be peaceful when possible. klutzy. doesn’t care what people think. joins during the story after leaving her old crew. 

fun fact: she has a scar on her ear from an earring that was pulled out 

Charly and Nina — the crew’s two parrots. Charly is blue and yellow and arrived the same year Victoire did; Nina is red, and arrived two years later. both didn’t seem to want to leave, so they were adopted.

♥️ i assume this is who is your favourite secondary/side character? 

oof. too many favourites. I do love Aria dearly, though. she’s snarky but also caring and it’s a wonderful combination. there’s a very cute scene where she’s patching up Tempest and having a heart-to-heart but then it ends on this joke. 

“On a completely unrelated note,” said Aria, “I detest bandaging shoulders.”

“I’m sorry. I’ll get the next drunk idiot with a broken bottle to hit me somewhere else instead.”

Aria snorted. “Please do.”

and it’s just super cute and one of my favourite bits of their banter. she’s able to move really well between funny or more ‘shallow’ conversation where it’s needed to cheer people up or just to tease them, to having deeper conversations which are generally just what the person needs to make them feel better. her advice is sometimes a bit tough-love but never delivered super harshly. 

🎈do you write for fun or would you like to be published? 

both. I would like to be published but I have no intention of doing that in the next few years, because I feel like that is a thing that Adults do and I am not an Adult Adult. 

also because hello that’s a lot of pressure. 

Hurricane and my other WIPs will probably end up on Wattpad or a similar site!

this is from chapter 7 (“east point pier”) 

Aella was impressed that he’d noticed. Aria’s knife was pretty small, and tended to be inconspicuous even if she wasn’t intentionally trying to hide it. But how should she explain why Aria wasn’t training? “Hey, Aria!” 

“Yes?” Aria limped over from where she’d been standing. 

“Theo asked why you’re not training. Can I—”

Aria smiled, deepening the lines around her eyes. “I’ll explain.” She lifted the hem of her skirt. 

Unlike Theo, Aella knew what to expect: left foot clad in a soft grey leather boot, the right made of wood, polished but largely unshaped. Behind her, Theo very carefully did not make a noise. 

as Aria goes on to explain, she used to be Tempest’s first mate until she lost her leg in an accident. that’s when the job went to Aella, about five years prior to the story. 

Aria is mostly happy to leave the fighting to the others; her job is patching them up afterwards!

“He wants us to follow it,” said Tempest. “Anvindr is many things, but he isn’t stupid.” 

“Why would he want us to follow it?” Aella said, accepting Aria’s offer of a hand up over the rail. Her sandy boots scrabbled on the side of the hull for a second, but then she got the purchase she needed and scrambled up and over.  

“He probably wants to lead us into a trap,” said Tempest, with a tone of nonchalance that didn’t seem to fit her words. At least, not if you didn’t know her. 

“Should we follow it?” Theo turned to Tempest with a small frown.

Theo is understandably concerned about Tempest’s plans...
