“Remember, when you land to send me a message to let me know you’ve made it safely,” Hux says in a low voice.
“I know.”
“Don’t be rash either. You have a nasty habit of talking back to your superiors, but I won’t be there to–”
“Hux, I know.” His face softens just a bit, enough for you to notice a difference this close to him, but give nothing to the people giving you two a wide berth. “I’m not stupid.”
“Could’ve fooled me,” he says dryly. He watches with a sharp eye at the men loading your bags to the shuttle. “I still don’t know why you’re being transferred,” Hux grumbles. There’s a nervous energy about him, making miniscule creases in his otherwise immaculate uniform as he shifts where he stands. You sigh.
“I don’t either,” you admit. “If you don’t know why, then it must’ve come from really high up.” The message that you would be moved to the Supremacy came a few hours ago, and was followed by another saying it was to be immediate. You had rushed to pack what you had, only sending Hux a brief message covertly asking him to meet with you in your quarters, but when he arrived, he was just as confused as you. He left to inquire around, but came up short, and decided to meet you back at the hangar. “You don’t think that–”
“There is no way anyone would know about this arrangement,” he says sharply, but it’s clear he’s thought about it as well. He frowns when someone fumbles with your bag, but his eyes snap back to yours. You wish you could take his hand in yours. “But it is best to still remain discreet.” You nod. “That unfortunately means no unsanctioned holocalls and no message out of place,” Hux sighs.
“What about your comm line?” you ask softly.
“It would be risky,” he says. “I believe it would be best if I were the one to contact you, not the other way around.” Now it was your turn to frown. Hux was notoriously awful at initiating first contact, but you know he’s right. His schedule was more erratic than yours was. Hux drops his shoulders as he gives you a tender look. “I will keep inquiring about the purposes of your transfer. Since you work directly under me, it would not seem out of place I’m asking why my officer was transferred without my approval or say.” You nod. A trooper calls for you. Your bags are all packed and the shuttle was ready to go. You turn back to Hux.
“I’ll miss you,” you say softly as you salute him. Hux gives you a curt nod as the stone cold mask slides back on, but his eyes remain soft for you.
“And I, you. Most terribly.”
