He had to check it again.
It wasn’t an uncommon sight for the CEO of Atlas to be at his desk in the dead of night; on top of wanting to burn the midnight oil thanks to a persistent idea or thought, his relationship with sleep had become strained during the company’s formative years. It was actually rarer to not see Rhys in his office at this time of night, plugging away at some- thing under his desk lamp’s light.
But tonight was just... one of those nights. One of those nights that felt like the ghosts of his past were crawling in at the edges of his brain-- as melodramatic as that sounded, there really wasn’t another way to put it. Something was making his mind itch, making his heart race, and the only way he could ever relax on these nights was...
... well. Digging out a small, heavy duty lock box from his bedside table and dragging it out to his office. One that contained bits and pieces of things from his time on Pandora-- the stun baton Yvette had given him, a chunk from the ruins of Helios, the now-useless piece of Eridium that Vallory used to stab him in the neck, and... another, smaller box. A black ring box, to be exact, except inside was his old ECHO-eye implant. Still intact. Years old, it didn’t work anymore, he’d done this so many times before that he knew it didn’t work anymore, and yet whenever this ter- rible, cold feeling wrapped itself around his throat like a snake, Rhys always came out to make sure it still wasn’t working.
The Jack AI was... in there, still. Trapped. Trapped in a piece of old junk that would never work again, but he still checked every time. Like it made it easier to forget.
He plugged it into the little rig he’d made forever ago-- just a few simple circuits and connectors that emulated his old implants. If this piece of haunted scrap ever did want to work, it would project Jack’s hologram, just like before, except... visible to the real world. Not just in his head. He plugged it in, and just like every other time, Rhys... waited. Breath caught in his throat, he stared back at his old ECHOeye, and he waited for something to happen.
