thinking about the 1940 occupation of iceland and how when american troops show up, america goes with them bc his country isnt actually involved yet (mid-1941) so he's like "neat i can go see england and hear about whats going on"
and he greets iceland, who probably looks around 15-16 still, like a kid. like "hey kiddo how's it going" and talking down to him. and iceland, DEEP into his teen phase and eternally annoyed with "older" nations, looks at this guy (who's only like 5 years older than him physically) and goes "i'm almost 700 years older than you."
england is admittedly pleased to see america so embarassed from one sentence. (but he's watching his back, figuratively, becaue he KNOWS denmark raised this kid, and he's still a liiiiiittle afraid of denmark As A Guy)
admittedly i used to ignore the "iceland's birth" strips in favor of having nor raise him from the get-go but i'm liking them more now... yes sir that is my little guy who appeared at the tender age of five and then raised himself until the signing of the old covenant in 1264. when he was still at the tender age of five.
(i picture him having grown so slowly that if you're seeing him daily, you wouldn't notice. but if you saw a picture of him in 874 versus one in 1814, it'd be like looking at the same kid in kindergarten versus fifth grade. i also think he didn't start growing noticeably until about 1845 (when the althing was restored) and he had his growth spurts around 1918 and 1944 (autonomy in a union w denmark and full independence respectively)... i think he would have reached his current age in the 80s or 90s)
i had another point to make on this post but i forget what it was. but anyway i think following canon (inasmuch as hetalia HAS canon) makes his resentment for nor's doting and his loneliness make more sense... character growth for me by finally liking canon for this LMFAO
the thing with scars on nations i think is that while they Can scar, i think they fade eventually... so like france's scar from being decapitated during the reign of terror is very faint. norway had scars from the black death that are almost entirely gone after 700 years. that sort of thing. i imagine some things scar worse than others - maybe there's like, a magical component to it? you focus too much on it, it stays longer? hmmm
when i write nations i tend to make them very close to human (bar the immortality obvs) but the one inhuman trait i like for them? eye shine. they are like cats
staring at lists of cars trying to figure out what ice drives but then it dawned on me. he probably walks everywhere within his capital and otherwise does a lot of that "jumping" that i've talked about to get elsewhere in his country.
he just strikes me as 1. unhappy but also comfortable with what he is and 2. the kind of person to not give a shit about weather conditions generally.
i also dont have a lot of health problem headcanons that i talk about but nor is hypermobile to me. the problem is he has so much chronic pain that he just attributes his joint issues to getting old rather than hypermobility. he goes "damn my hip hurts today" ignoring the fact that he can move it In Ways He Shouldnt and attributes it to one (1) injury he got in the 17th century that actually healed really well
admittedly i fucking love any viking art of nor den and swe but i think based on how baby nations work in hetalia. they would be little guys in the viking age. i think their vikings watched them Not Age and gave these babies swords. (probably because denmark kept bugging them for one)
new thrall: who is that
random viking, speaking like a proud father: that is our nation we love him and he fights good [nation in question is ten years old and his axe is as tall as he is. also he is covered in blood]
