about the aaron being homophobic - i think that whilst it could be easily interpreted as being homophobic bc of the terminology of flamer (which is in my copy) nd imo it makes aaron border on homophobic simply bc in context it seems to be a way of insulting/taunting neil w sexuality ? though i also think that even if aaron comes off as homophobic a bit there, he can definitely develop over time into being completely accepting ? (part one - turns out I have more to say than I thought)
okay but now I’ve re-read ur post I do agree that with that scene with neil, the homophobia isn’t black and white. I also think that even if aaron comes off as homophobic during the series several times (if I’m remembering correctly - he frequently shows disgust at all things vaguely gay? might not be remembering right tho) I’m sure that he can grow as a person nd become educated enough to be fully supportive and stuff ? (this is part two and I still hav more to say? wow) (2/3)
actually no i dnt have more to say because i cant word it, but ! i very much like aaron as a character and i think he is v complex and interesting and it makes me V sad that the fandom reduces him to being, ‘homophobic,’ when there is more to it than that, nd i hope i phrased everything alright - nd thank you for adding more depth to aaron i guess ? and posting positive stuff about him , bc u made me value him as a character more :)(3/3)
(there, see, it’d be so easy to just bring it to the inbox like the post says)
i agree on a lot of this, actually! like, okay, aaron came off as homophobic in the mountains scene, but that was deliberate, as far as i could tell. in aaron’s context, he was using that, again, to make neil tell him if he and andrew were serious. he was going to use that info to see if he can invalidate his deal with andrew by saying that “hey bro, you said we’d have no relations in between with this deal, what’s with your bf? that means i can keep my gf, right?”
though on a side note on some of it… i reread the series when i did my aaron pov fic around january, and i didn’t really remember any of the scenes with aaron and nicky as homophobic. and while i do remember one canon line going “aaron gave nicky grief abt his sexuality,” it kind of irks me that people forget that this book is dated. nora’s definition of sexuality isn’t the one we all relate to as sexual attraction, but the textbook definition of sexuality as in affinity for sex.
so when aaron gives nicky grief for his sexuality or his jokes, it’s usually more to the fact that nicky always brings sex into the picture, and, again, it’s not a pretty picture to imagine since they’re cousins.
but thank you! both for your insight and the compliments to us. gosh, welcome to the club, you’re all welcome to enjoy aaron as a character here. we all hate it when the fandom just turns him into this dry character that’s nothing but “ew gays,” when he’s got more sides to it.
