“ is there anything else you like? movies? games? talking to yourself, maybe? ”

         a  very  encouraging  opening  for  a  conversation  –  alice  beamed  and  replied  eagerly,  ❛  oh,  there  are  a  great  many  things  i  like !  games,  yes,  &&  making  daisy  chains,  playing  with  my  cat  dinah  …  wait.  ❜  the  smile  fell  from  alice’s  lips,  replaced  with  a  frown  as  she  regarded  the  red-headed  man.

         ❛  are  you  making  fun  of  me?  ❜  alice’s  words  took  on  a  quietly  offended  tone,  as  she  came  to  the  realisation  that  he  must  have  overheard  her  earlier.  she’d  never  understood  why  there  was  such  a  stigma  around  the  act  of  conversing  with  oneself.  what  was  the  harm?  she  liked  to  think  she  gave  herself  very  good  advice  (  though  she  very  seldom  followed  it.  )

           ❛  yes,  i  do  sometimes  talk  to  myself.  it’s  a  perfectly  ordinary  thing  to  do.  ❜  with  her  chin  lifted  loftily,  she  dared  him  to  say  otherwise.
